China Closes “Fake Museum”

Jibaozhai-museum-sign-post

China has closed an 88-million dollar museum and “patriotic education center” after the majority of its exhibits were found to be fakes, including such classic pieces as a Qing dynasty vase decorated with cartoon characters, despite the protests of curators who insist “at least half” the exhibits are genuine.

The Jibaozhai Museum, a 4-storey museum built in 2007 on a 4-hectare village site in China’s Hebei province for the sum of 540 million yuan, boasted 12 exhibition halls and was designated a “patriotic education centre” and tourist attraction by the government.

However, it transpires that most, if not all, of its 40,000 exhibits and “20 million yuan” collection were fakes.

These included items identified as having been made by a legendary emperor from 2700BC but signed in modern post-revolutionary simplified Chinese characters, porcelain using techniques not in existence when they were supposedly made, and a Qing dynasty vase decorated with modern cartoon characters.

Officials have launched an investigation and withdrawn its license, and the museum itself is now closed.

The owner protests that “even the gods cannot tell whether the exhibits are fake or not,” whilst the deputy curator maintains that “at least half” the exhibits are genuine, although he does concede “most of the exhibits were not verified by experts.”

The museum was rumbled after a Beijing writer visited and expressed his scepticism about the descriptions of the exhibits on Sina Weibo, prompting local authorities to investigate in response to the massive ridicule they suffered as a result.

The museum was already unpopular with local villagers as they received only 20,000 yuan each for their land after it was sold to developers for millions, but their objections were of course ignored. They allege it was used as part of a money-laundering scheme by the local magnate who built it.

I find it said that people do not like Indiana Jones references. My post got downvoted just because Sean Connery was relieved to know that the vase was fake.

Since China makes so many fakes, it's only fair they have a museum of fakes which parodies itself.

Yes, but he's actually just a wax statue stolen from an American museum wearing a t-shirt with a Chinese flag on it. No one seems to have noticed yet.

    Hahahaha oh China.

Do you think, at one point, the Chinese people themselves will just get sick of this kind of shit, stand up and say, we have to stop this?

We have to, before all of our culture is lost and we are reduced to a people of soulless worker bees who can only duplicate what the rest of the world creates.

Maybe it'll never happen. Because it seems the majority of Chinese lack any semblance of creativity or pride. Actually wait a second, aren't the Chinese some of the most patriotic people in the world, laying claim to so much land they feel is part of their own country?

Why is it then that they don't have any sort of pride when it comes to their own creative achievements as a culture? Do they feel content being liars and fakes, as long as they can keep up appearances (which they are trying, but obviously failing miserably)?

Depends on who gets the "benefits" from the ruling government though.
The "rich" Chinese ppl in the capital are the most annoying when it comes to their patriotic stand. While the "poor" Chinese ppl in the rural do PROTEST and get oppressed every single time; just that you don't know about it, unless it's big and involved hundreds of ppl (being swept anyway).

The life of the poor in china is so pathetic, so why not try for a change.

Vote? Haha, funny. What would election do when you have one party? The ones who get nominated are the most "communist" (read "benefits" sharing) ones anyway.

The one, (who is dumb enough) who is brave enough to speak out, will be target for revenge soon enough.

Hope you get your share of depression from China.

Besides the more obvious tools censoring and oppression the government have another trick: Incite public protests against other countries like Japan, United States, to promote patriotism and channel the anger of the masses. Hey! Why fight for your rights when you already are too busy protesting about a bunch of rocks in the middle of the ocean?

Destruction of all culture and transforming the people in soulless worker bees who can only duplicate what the rest of the world creates? Sorry but this already happened and China have many statues and portraits of the responsible for this.

Wasn't it their goal for the museum to be closed soon after opening so that they can sell the land and facilities for dirt cheap?
Obviously the properties won't be sold to the locals who lost their land because of this fake museum.

This is actually endemic amongst their 'academic' circles: Falsification of history and origins to try and weakly claim they are the 'oldest' civilization, creating hoaxes about pottery pieces and 'ancient sites' that turn out to be fabricated.

Oldest human origin and culture belongs to western greeks/european explorers, africans, and mesopotamia (india too along genghis).

They even tried to claim Gengis Khan was 'chiense'. That's same as jews saying hitler was a 'jew' and thus their hero (because he looked more like them than other people), while it is well known the Great Khan HATED the han chinese with passion and made it his personal goal to rape and kill every single han chinese via genocide - he was only dissuaded when one of his advisors said it would be better to keep them as tax slaves.

Chinese 'historical claims': Get fucked by someone else, claim they are 'one of us' and say everything is 'chinese' when in fact not even their own language is original chinese anymore (the han chinese language was replaced by manchu-driven chinese dialect, which exists today as mandarin, while REAL chinese are considered 'dialects' today), not to mention their people who are just mongrels of every other nations around them.
