Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has provoked the ire of Japanese gamers by complaining that it is their inability to stomach the challenge of difficult action games which has led to the genre’s decline in Japan, even as challenge-loving American gamers happily lap them up.
Miyamoto’s comments came during an otherwise uninteresting interview discussing Nintendo’s latest Pikmin remake:
I’ve been making action games for some 30 years, and I’ve been thinking about the difference evident in how their popularity has been gradually declining in Japan whilst in America it has been maintained.
The issue is that Japanese who cannot overcome the level of difficulty in an action game no longer want to play them. This perception then spreads to all games as a whole, and people avoid them because they see them as difficult.
In the case of America, there are a lot more people who enjoy a challenge and will stick with it for you and try to overcome the initial hurdle.
Yes, it’s action games which really demand a certain level of skill.
Right, some players just enjoy playing, some prefer to finish it, and some prefer greater challenge. People looking for a challenge will dismiss an easily cleared game as “easy.”
But by making things too difficult, the people who just want to play get driven off. I always wanted to accommodate both types.
His comments have not been well received by Japanese gamers – although with the topic of the difficulty of Japanese games being so controversial overseas it seems he may have some sympathisers there at least:
“Yes, yes. It’s all the fault of the Japanese.”
“The reason they declined was because of idiots like this blaming everything on their customers.”
“It’s because they only know how to make games for children now.”
“Nintendo, the reason you’ve declined is because of your endless remakes, that’s all.”
“Certainly, you need perseverance to play on the Wii U. Holding that horribly heavy pad was just too much for me.”
“I suppose all this is why pay-to-win social games are all the rage now.”
“If you are a kid with no money but lots of free time taking your time on a difficult game makes sense, but if you are an adult with money but no free time the opposite is true.”
“Games recently are too simple. You should die if you make one slight mistake.”
“Who wants to play a game where if you miss one pixel on the screen it is an instant game over.”
“Now things are split between lots of casuals and a few hardcore gamers. You can’t meet their requirements at the same time.”
“The gaming audience has aged and no longer has time for the hassle of difficult action games.”
“People talk like difficulty determines how much fun a game is. It is the other way around really – a game has to be fun to make you keep playing and enjoying the challenge.”
“The real issue is not the difficulty but the level of effort you have to consider investing to overcome a given level of difficulty.”
“Japanese just get bored of them more easily.
“I seem to recall a lot of western games used to be very difficult. Then they got dumbed down and sold more as a result. Really I think the Japanese games aren’t selling because of a lack of ideas though.”
“Wait, if what he is saying about Japanese being quitters is true how come Monster Hunter is so popular still? Don’t overseas players moan about it being too difficult?”
“I don’t get him at all. He’s blaming the fact their action games sell like hot cakes in America but not in Japan on the Japanese? Blaming your customers is hardly a good business strategy…”
“Well, you rarely see western games so difficult nobody can complete them…”
“Gaming demographics just differ in the US and Japan, and the ones in the US tend to be more committed?”
“Games are supposed to be fun. Playing them needn’t be treated as an act of self-mortification.”

cats are interesting
A pussy is always fine...
A pussy is always 'purrrfect'.
"A cat is fine too."
17:45 It's from a Tsukihime doujin. The guy who made it also did a few manga series with a decent amount of success, like "Doujin Works" and "Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to".
What manga was "A cat is fine too" from?
17:45, use a bloody search engine.
Though not by Nintendo, some of the hardest games I've played were mostly Japanese games. Prinny : Can I really be the hero? still bring back nightmares...
And Shin Megami Tensei. I swear, that entire franchise is built to make you cry.
Prinny is insanely hard. I couldn't keep up with the difficulty and left it, it was so frustrating. I must be one of the gamers Miyamoto-san is talking about, although I'm not japanese.
Sounds like fun.
The hardest games I ever played were western puzzle games like 7th guest and 11th hour.
>makes games for casual gamers
>complain they aren't hardcore
Nintendo®
-can't compete with the 2 company in terms of graphics.
Graphics should be the least of your concerns if the game plays like a pile of shit.
Because all high end AAA games like Skyrim, GTA and Uncharted play like shit....
Dark Souls II for WiiU when?
All AAA should play like McPixel
Mario games are more hardcore than this games with uber graphics and linear one button gameplay.
Dark Souls II needed, why?
Artificial difficulty, yaaay.....pfft.....
Every sort of difficulty is "artificial" because it has to correspond to the general trend of providing overpowered gear/skills to the player at a certain point.
From Software's approach to this was hard-hitting enemies at all stages, plus unforgiving bosses/low to moderate advantages from gear/penalties on death etc.
Bethesda's approach is level-scaling/gear-scaling and a generally total lack of balance because overpowered gear/skills can be attained way too early and their AI routines aren't exactly shining.
This is the problem with the industry: they're all too afraid to make different games that wont appeal to a broad enough audience. They make a game that has a little bit of everything and it turns out bland and boring.
Nintendo has been trying very hard to rectify the casual part of the Wii with the Wii U. The only problem, is hardly any 3rd parties give a fuck to make an original game for it. Thus it doesn't sell. Then people say "If it sells more, we'll make more games" and thus we are in a perpetual limbo.
Also: Who gives a FUCK about graphics? that's all PS4 has over the Wii U. At least Nintendo cares enough to target 60FPS for basically ALL of their games. Nintendo land running at 60FPS looks better than every single PS3 and 360 game i've ever played.
Same with Pikmin 3.
Now why on earth would anyone down-vote you for that? Seriously, Nintendo may be lacking in graphics (which is a moot point anyway as graphics can hardly be improved more in a way that the average person would notice them anyway, besides which it's "aesthetics" that really matter), but when it comes to appealing towards gamers (as in people who actually fucking PLAY games), they exceed Sony and Microsoft by leaps and bounds.
Miyamoto-san must be playing too much Ninja Gaiden.
Can't tell if trolling or not. I mean, he's talking about the same Western demographic that laps up Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 like it's the best thing ever. It looks like a fighting game, but its not. It's just a button-mashing party game. From what I've heard, Japanese gamers just laugh at that game, as far as the actual tournament scene goes. Not only that but I see American podcasters that try to turn down the difficulty of games like Deadpool during midplay because 'they don't want to try too hard.' You know who I'm talking to, VGA. You're a fucking balding disgrace to actual gamers.
Though if Miyamoto's talking trash on Japanese gamers, then it must be said that both sides of the equation are receding in terms of skill. Course it doesn't help that the last couple of generations on both sides are so whiny and self entitled and always have excuses ready for when the game beats them. Seriously, the gaming community as a whole need to step things up a notch or ten if we want some real games to get published. I'm tired of games trying to coddle me and tell me how to play in the beginning. River City Ransom never explained to me how to kick people till they vomited, or how to lob trashcans at their heads for instant slap-stick. The next Smash Bros is going to be a gaming event, and I really hope Miyamoto doesn't see the need to make it easy. Even though it's a platform game, it'll still be closer to an actual fighter than Marvel 3 ever will.
marvel isn't a button mashing party game the problem with it is that it falls under the classification of kusoge. marvel isn't button mashing it just falls into the realm of cheap play. japanese fighting game players don't tend to like fighters with touch of death combos and highly exploitable gameplay. thats what marvel is about finding the cheesiest way to play and exploiting it and the american audience eats it up. japanese audience tends to cater more toward technical fighting games like kof etc with very little forgiveness and requiring strict execution for combos
Raiden must pay Miyamoto-san too much, these comments are getting out of hand.
True games this days are fucking easy, normal mode shall be called easy mode, some friends hated ninja gaiden because they couldnt pass the second level.
Industry this days are fucking quitters. You give them megaman 2 and they will quit like pansies
Maybe because we don't the same amount of time for masturbation that the hard core gamers do
You do what now? Hardcore masturbation? Been on the internet at little to long?
I agree, but in my experience it's mostly due to the fact that most people nowadays want to clear as many games as possible as quick as possible. Some of my friends stop playing a game if they hear that it's over 30 hours long for the average player. And one of my friends refuse to play on anything other than easy mode.
For me though it's the other way around. I want to be able to enjoy a game over the course of a handful of free days. And if i hear that a game i'm intersted in buying is easy, it often makes me reconsider.
As for difficult games... i'm a competitive person, so if i hear that a game is difficult, i take it as a challenge, and often end up buying it just because of that.
Then again, it's of no surprise. Back in the days most games were difficult so people learned how to play well to play at all. Nowadays there are easier games so people don't have to do that.
Myself, I enjoy challenging games even if playing them means I'll fail 100 times before getting a single win in. But I see why some people wouldn't enjoy such a masochistic campaign.
Actually back in the day games were hard solely to stretch them out so people didn't realize they were paying through the nose for an experience that without grossly unfair handicaps would have lasted maybe half an hour to an hour at most.
Welcome to World of casualcraft
i dont LIKE your welcome back either.
Warcraft is like the Teletubbies of video games, and thats 90% of western gamers.
Apparently he doesn't know about Touhou.
To be fair, there's probably a lot of Touhou fans who don't even realize Touhou is a series of games, and not just smutty doujin.
its like saying no one knows CAVE games either... they like to up the ante
I'm sorry, we're good with touhou ...
Touhou solve everything, we believe it
Aren't they basically touhouners?
I thought the term was TouWhores?XD
Miyamoto: touhou? not even once
He doesn't need to because that falls under niche titles, as in they don't sell millions of copies. Weaboo.
Are you seriously saying that on this site, really now, really?
Getting called weeaboo by an ignorant anon, lol.
I like my country and i don't exchange english words with japanese one, and honestly we're in 2013 who even uses that word anymore? if you don't know the meaning of a word don't use it, you're probably just trolling but it's good to give you a lecture.
Don't get butthurt over immature trolling. He just wants to get people mad.
@23:08
The only thing I'd say is that it's less about weeaboos and more about japanophiles. Weeaboos generally sound like retarded children imitating another language while worshipping Japan.
Japanophiles on the other hand loses that trait, but is hardcore nationalistic adoption of Japan whilst still being ignorant as fuck and a hypocrite about all topics from politics to porn.
Haha he comes to a weaboo site to complain about weaboos to weaboos, go back to furaffiaty and hang out with your brony friends.
hey, that's rude to the furries and bronies
