Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has provoked the ire of Japanese gamers by complaining that it is their inability to stomach the challenge of difficult action games which has led to the genre’s decline in Japan, even as challenge-loving American gamers happily lap them up.
Miyamoto’s comments came during an otherwise uninteresting interview discussing Nintendo’s latest Pikmin remake:
I’ve been making action games for some 30 years, and I’ve been thinking about the difference evident in how their popularity has been gradually declining in Japan whilst in America it has been maintained.
The issue is that Japanese who cannot overcome the level of difficulty in an action game no longer want to play them. This perception then spreads to all games as a whole, and people avoid them because they see them as difficult.
In the case of America, there are a lot more people who enjoy a challenge and will stick with it for you and try to overcome the initial hurdle.
Yes, it’s action games which really demand a certain level of skill.
Right, some players just enjoy playing, some prefer to finish it, and some prefer greater challenge. People looking for a challenge will dismiss an easily cleared game as “easy.”
But by making things too difficult, the people who just want to play get driven off. I always wanted to accommodate both types.
His comments have not been well received by Japanese gamers – although with the topic of the difficulty of Japanese games being so controversial overseas it seems he may have some sympathisers there at least:
“Yes, yes. It’s all the fault of the Japanese.”
“The reason they declined was because of idiots like this blaming everything on their customers.”
“It’s because they only know how to make games for children now.”
“Nintendo, the reason you’ve declined is because of your endless remakes, that’s all.”
“Certainly, you need perseverance to play on the Wii U. Holding that horribly heavy pad was just too much for me.”
“I suppose all this is why pay-to-win social games are all the rage now.”
“If you are a kid with no money but lots of free time taking your time on a difficult game makes sense, but if you are an adult with money but no free time the opposite is true.”
“Games recently are too simple. You should die if you make one slight mistake.”
“Who wants to play a game where if you miss one pixel on the screen it is an instant game over.”
“Now things are split between lots of casuals and a few hardcore gamers. You can’t meet their requirements at the same time.”
“The gaming audience has aged and no longer has time for the hassle of difficult action games.”
“People talk like difficulty determines how much fun a game is. It is the other way around really – a game has to be fun to make you keep playing and enjoying the challenge.”
“The real issue is not the difficulty but the level of effort you have to consider investing to overcome a given level of difficulty.”
“Japanese just get bored of them more easily.
“I seem to recall a lot of western games used to be very difficult. Then they got dumbed down and sold more as a result. Really I think the Japanese games aren’t selling because of a lack of ideas though.”
“Wait, if what he is saying about Japanese being quitters is true how come Monster Hunter is so popular still? Don’t overseas players moan about it being too difficult?”
“I don’t get him at all. He’s blaming the fact their action games sell like hot cakes in America but not in Japan on the Japanese? Blaming your customers is hardly a good business strategy…”
“Well, you rarely see western games so difficult nobody can complete them…”
“Gaming demographics just differ in the US and Japan, and the ones in the US tend to be more committed?”
“Games are supposed to be fun. Playing them needn’t be treated as an act of self-mortification.”

I thought Japan was also inside the "Asian Level" circle.
It's silly, but lots of Japanese people dont even consider themselves 'asian'. The word 'asia' seems to have foreign 'exotic' connotations. If you say 'asia' in Japan, people tend to assume you mean Indian/Sri Lankan/Philippines in my experience, rarely even China.
That's because India IS asian, japanese are oriental.
Apparently you missed the part where he said Japanese DO NOT consider themselves to be Orientals / Asians. They seriously believe their genes to be superior to other Asian races, thus do not consider their people to be 'Asian'. Welcome to Bigotry 101
LOL @ japs being delusional fucks. They should petition to have mental gymnastics be included as an olympic sport.
Now I feel silly that nobody understood the Power level joke.
Hint:
Super Mario 2 Lost Levels
And yet dark soul get a sequel .
How about Armored Core? That shit is hard.
really? which one? I've played most of them except that latest, and they're easy as heck.
Exactly. Dark Souls was successful in both Japan and America. Guess it depends on the type of game.
The States is crazy about Dark Souls, but I'm thinking it's because you can invade someone's world and gank them repeatedly, it's how we brutes roll I guess.
Compared to the video games of the 80s and 90s these latest ones are creampuff anyway
Except Japan's probably the best at FGs and bullet hell shooters lul
Except those are niche titles aka titles that don't sell millions of units.
There's plenty of niche titles out there that only stay niche due to not having a lot of exposure, though.
Bullet hells are an actual niche through. Most people don't have the patience to get good at them, or the reaction speeds to be competent at them.
In fact the reason why so many shooters are available on 360 and not PS3 is because Sony requires minimum orders of 40K units, while Microsoft does orders of 10K.
As in the sales on bullet hell shooters is so small, that any additional pressings would be financially unfeasible on PS3.
So your point is entirely mute. In the future please think before making such stupid retorts.
Yet the market for them is tiny. Which also means a small degree of followers. Which also mean less $ compared to other genres.
Yes and those are played by an absolutely hardcore niche group of people. Totally not relevant to the general statement. You're one of those that think that Japanese people are ALL super-humanly proficient at DDR because of a few ridiculous youtube vids, right?
This year it seems Japan lost to other regions in most EVO 2013 tournaments, actually.
It's only because of their internet speed, in the U.S. 10mps is considered "high speed"
I always thought that it's the Japanese that likes more difficult stuff, after seeing how the American release of Mega Man 2 had an "Easy Mode", because the default difficulty is supposedly too hard.
Also, back then, it's the Japanese that have more tolerance to blood and gore, seeing how American version of Japanese games always seem to have some stuff removed but nowadays, it's the other way around.
You're making an assumption about today's people, by looking at one game released in 1988?
Hah, there are casuals around the globe anyway. This isn't just exclusives to japanese.
cats are interesting
A pussy is always fine...
A pussy is always 'purrrfect'.
"A cat is fine too."
What manga was "A cat is fine too" from?
17:45, use a bloody search engine.
17:45 It's from a Tsukihime doujin. The guy who made it also did a few manga series with a decent amount of success, like "Doujin Works" and "Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to".
I remember how SIREN 1 was a hit in Japan but flopped everywhere else because it was "too hard". Not an action game, though.
Oh, there're also all those fighting games that are popular in Japan. I've been trying to get people to play them with me for decades, but everyone always says fighting games are "too hard".
I dunno. Everything Miyamoto said makes sense if you switch Japanese and Westerner around. He's getting old, perhaps he got them mixed up.
Man games like Siren...Only Japan.
I think the main problem is not that the Japanese gamers changed but the people who buy Nintendo games changed. Nintendo turned their games to casuals and casuals don't like extra hard games.
Them grandparents, soccer moms, and sub 10 year old demographics lol...
Siren sucked because of the bad voice acting, British accents on Japanese ? Why not just keep the original voices? Also all the character renders had really bad teeth.
And the original Super Mario Brothers 2 and Super Mario Brothers 3 were changed because American's wanted harder games... said no one ever.
Mario 3 is the same in both countries, you retard.
Really? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ5kfMeeICc
Only one of those actually changes the gameplay, the rest are mostly cosmetic. And even then, the game is still the same. Mario 3 was always an easy title, taking an extra hit to die isn't going to change that. Nice try thou, fag.

>makes games for casual gamers
>complain they aren't hardcore
Nintendo®
-can't compete with the 2 company in terms of graphics.
Graphics should be the least of your concerns if the game plays like a pile of shit.
Dark Souls II for WiiU when?
Because all high end AAA games like Skyrim, GTA and Uncharted play like shit....
All AAA should play like McPixel
Mario games are more hardcore than this games with uber graphics and linear one button gameplay.
Dark Souls II needed, why?
Artificial difficulty, yaaay.....pfft.....
Every sort of difficulty is "artificial" because it has to correspond to the general trend of providing overpowered gear/skills to the player at a certain point.
From Software's approach to this was hard-hitting enemies at all stages, plus unforgiving bosses/low to moderate advantages from gear/penalties on death etc.
Bethesda's approach is level-scaling/gear-scaling and a generally total lack of balance because overpowered gear/skills can be attained way too early and their AI routines aren't exactly shining.
Nintendo has been trying very hard to rectify the casual part of the Wii with the Wii U. The only problem, is hardly any 3rd parties give a fuck to make an original game for it. Thus it doesn't sell. Then people say "If it sells more, we'll make more games" and thus we are in a perpetual limbo.
Also: Who gives a FUCK about graphics? that's all PS4 has over the Wii U. At least Nintendo cares enough to target 60FPS for basically ALL of their games. Nintendo land running at 60FPS looks better than every single PS3 and 360 game i've ever played.
Same with Pikmin 3.
Now why on earth would anyone down-vote you for that? Seriously, Nintendo may be lacking in graphics (which is a moot point anyway as graphics can hardly be improved more in a way that the average person would notice them anyway, besides which it's "aesthetics" that really matter), but when it comes to appealing towards gamers (as in people who actually fucking PLAY games), they exceed Sony and Microsoft by leaps and bounds.
This is the problem with the industry: they're all too afraid to make different games that wont appeal to a broad enough audience. They make a game that has a little bit of everything and it turns out bland and boring.
