KyoAni’s greatest anime yet continues to enjoy huge popularity even amongst demographics who would traditionally spurn titles not centred on the Type B antics of loveable moeblobs, to say nothing of the overwhelming popularity it now enjoys amongst the deservedly smug fujoshi crowd…
Fans still in denial about the merits of a cast of lithe young men all too eager to whip off their clothes at the mere sight of open water have been ensuring the gender-swapped cast enjoy a parallel existence of their own:
There are even the charms of Gou to contend with:

No thanks.
Fujoshis and gays need fanservice, too!
I'm gay and didn't liked this, I prefer my guys manlier
Cho Aniki?
Well, its for gay otaku in Japan, where only pretty boy matter..
kill yourself
Free! again?
kill me pls, kill me now.
Still waiting on an episode review of Watamote.
Redhead wants the d....both of them.
maybe one day the dreamy idealists wants dissappear. or is there someone outthere except redhead which needs to know this?
i get the subliminal feeling this could be directed to me.
even if i visit other sites.. my "blockades and filters" are at 100%. i think there is more to it because of this ;)
like some circle of bitching stalkers and informaters.
Girl
NOT fujoshi (yuri fangirl though)
Still like Free!, it has a nice concept, the swimming and all.
WOW! Seriously!? I'm starting to be really worried. First this anime, that is supposedly little more than a pure fanservice, is being received not only with enthusiasm among fujoshi and female otaku in general (that's expected,) but also has had some positive feedback between male otaku, and now even receives appreciation among yuri fan girls!. What kind of supernatural power has Kyoani?
Don't assume that, because you dislike this anime, everyone should dislike it, or that there are normal people that should dislike, and weird people that should like. This is false.
Only members can downvotes… so I suspect some members to downvote comments in secret.
And I have my idea on that question… some menbers with usernames beginning with "Ak" and "Ta". Well done democracy.
Other than 2 or 3 comments I pretty much ignored this whole thread. So sorry it isn't 2 people causing 100 downvotes.
Most people will judge things just by the looks without trying anyway.
@04:02
WOW! Seriously!? I'm starting to be really worried with kyoani.
First, an anime who is supposed to be little more that flagrant fanservice for yaoi fan lovers is receiving praise not only by rabid fujoshi (understandable) but also for some straight males, and now is liked even for yuri fan girls! What strange power have kyoani that even corrupt the yuri fangirls?
I have a great amount of respect for the female yuri fans, because they tend to be totally obscured by the fujoshi and by the "normal" otaku girls, so I'm quite interested in knowing their opinion.
I want to see a Watamote article...
Any smart animation studios are out there making anime about girls in tight swimsuits right now? Anyone? None..?
Awwwww... that sucks.
That scene in the tube with water squirting isn't suggestive at all is it
Free! may be ok, especially for a KyoAni anime, but it's hardly fantastic. I can understand a hardcore fan of this type of thing to WANT it to be fantastic, but it's not.
It's a collection of simplistic cliches woven into a typical slice-of-life story, with the same basic roster of character archetypes KyoAni has worked with for years, and absolutely no deviation from their usual writing or comedy standards.
Again, it's not bad, but it's hardly compelling material. It's staple stuff, and just happens to have a relatively fun angle on fanservice and KyoAni's usual animation standards. If that's enough to make it fantastic, then LOTS of anime are also fantastic, just for other equally-petty reasons.
"Especially for a KyoAni anime", ok; since when has KyoAni been inherently bad? KyoAni does not deserve all the shit it gets, and I'm one who finds anime like K-On! and Tamako Market to be some of the most annoying anime imaginable. I wouldn't mind K-On! as much if it has a fanbase that didn't look up to it like the messiah. I do not care what anyone says, Haruhi was a great anime; and it wasn't about the "moeblobs"; Hyouka was really good and Chu2koi was as close to their "golden days" as they've gotten. I mean, KyoAni are the kind of studio who first seemed to have the right idea. After they stopped making Key anime (which I'm not much of a fan of anyway) and Haruhi bombed they seemed to have drifted off.
Well, what's cool now? Girls who look like pudding. Lets make an anime about girls who look like pudding... but they play guitar.
What's cool now? Well, lately we've seen a resurgence of popularity in the "effeminate men with yaoi under/overtones" themed anime, so let's do something like that... but they swim.
Honestly, idgaf about Free! it's ecchi for girls, so as a straight dude of course I'm not going to want to watch a bunch of macho dudes w/ erotic insinuations. Nobody can call me closed minded about this, Sankaku's articles always strive to be far from logic to begin a "conversation", aka people bashing other people's opinions senselessly. But KyoAni is, by all means; not a bad animation company, they're a bad animation company if you look at their pandering as of late, but they are not inherently bad.
Oh, and regarding the messiah comment; Haruhi can get away with that because that was actually a multigenre story that got better as it went along, not just a show about lesbian girls who like drinking tea and playing guitar.
Look, I might like their anime, you might like their anime, but let's not overreact here. They're not known for much other than their animation, and there are good reasons for that. As a fan, I want them to improve, not stroke their egos because "wow that water looks good" and "hey, at least they adapted Haruhi pretty well, especially that one film."
Free really is just a typical KyoAni production: completely forgettable on the whole. But this time at least they're pandering to a different crowd and having some fun with meta-humor. That's a step in a bold new direction for these guys, and as such I'm not going to write it off entirely.
Oops, did I say something vaguely positive about Free, and something vaguely negative about KyoAni? What was I thinking.. downvote me into oblivion, you stalwart guardians, you.
Nope, it's for gays and fujoshi, don't try to trick us.
Indeed, anyone that argues otherwise is a gay in the closet!
lol, so ironic...
It's just hard core KyoAni fanboys, who refuse to admit that KyoAni is capable of putting out crap every now and then.
Anyone who takes the words of fanboys of any product as fact is just asking to have their lunch money taken.
Fujiyoshi, gay men, and brainwashed kyoani fanboys can enjoy the show all the want. I'll pass, thanks.
but this is a pretty good show though. not sure if srs.
No, it's not good and you most likely fall into one of the three aforemented categories.
Sorry but I'm a gay out of the closet and I can tell you that this thing do nothing to me
the boys are to girlish to be of my taste
This series is totally for hetero women that enjoy to watch homo situatuions, or hetero men that also enjoy to watch girlish guys
So you are gay but you like manly guys, well if a man is gay he isn't manly, oh the irony in your comments.
i am sure THIS nonsense (in the opposite to some shizo-like nonsense) can be twisted even further ^^
Actually, there is a huge amount of gay ppl who only likes manly guys and can't stand the girlish ones... a friend of mine was stuck in that situation, until he did a sex change.
kill yourself please
or just stop contaminating our air.
anon 10:08
I like MEN, stupid, if I wanted someone girlish I wouldn't like men in fist place
Blake shut up. The anon of 10:08 11/07/2013 asked a very accurate question that touches an important point of our society.
Tolerance, please!
I really miss the -dark touhou test- age Artefact, he could really get you into something not this homo with his supposedly funny jokes
Agreed, animes are just getting worse and worse with each passing season. Looks like they are turning into hollywood, running out of idea's for animes.
I haven't watched this series and probably won't, but I wouldn't say anime keeps getting worse and worse. I mean have you even watched Shingeki no Kyojin? Definitely a good series so I doubt your claim that anime keeps getting worse and worse.
Kyoani anime however...
Funny you'd say that, since K-On fit the description for running out of ideas for anime, AND turning into Hollywood. Making a show about a bunch of buff swimming dudes seems to be something fairly original to both Hollywood AND anime. :p
Anyone who likes seeing muscular pretty-boys tear their shirts off repeatedly will definitely enjoy Free! Anyone else will probably want to look elsewhere for entertainment.
So yeah, gays and fujoshi.
No, only fujoshis and fundashis, and trap otakus
Trap otaku? Unless Gou is actually a man, there isn't a trap in this show.
...Though an anime about a swimming club full of traps would be pretty glorious. What'll it take to get this project green-lighted?
well, one of those guys is a trap in potence
hot potatoes peeling action ... i may have to try this after all .
I don't like Free! due to the fact that I'll admit the only reason I would watch a anime about swimming would be for superficial reasons.
well said moetard, little respect to you for admitting it
i guess you watched kuroko no basket cuz you like guys w/ tanktops? amiright?
well I do like Kuroko no Basket alot because it's actually very interesting and not really directed towards a singular audience. While Free! seems like it's highly directed towards the female-esque audience as well as anime fans who are into swimming. I don't think it's really gay at all and I'm kind of a homophobic. Honestly, this anime is just really for those certain groups of people so it's pretty understandable why others don't like it.
i watched kuroko up to the match against the 1 prodigy, then it became worst plot wise so dumped it. As for free i don't think i would watch it even if they were all women. At most try it if there were both (since i dislike a show who is only directed at a gender)
In that case, there's always Umisho!
I can honestly say, Im so excited that its going to be a sport anime. If they dont focus on the swimming, Im out.
