Free!, Kyoto Animation’s homo-erotically charged foray into the world of a highschool swimming club, seems to have received a rapturous welcome from fujoshi and otaku alike, with the show’s lithely entertaining characters coming in for almost as much praise as their gorgeously animated and exceedingly frequent strip scenes…

You guys forget the only reason Free is in existence is because of the huge reception a 30 second(??) video got. There weren’t originally plans to make it an anime at all, but the video went viral on tumblr and caught the attention of thousands, if not millions, of girls across the world – who all nicknamed it “swimming anime”. No matter what studio made it, it would’ve been an insane hit because it formed an entire fanbase without even being anything but a short animated video of guys swimming.
Frankly, the whole “this is disgusting” bullshit is completely over-exaggerating. Guys walking around shirtless is seen as completely okay by society – underage girls, or any girls at all really, flashing their boobs or panties really isn’t. There are no dicks and so far there doesn’t really seem to be any romance between any of them besides the fanbases shipping (despite the uses of “-chan” it’s not really the stereotypical yaoi “M-mako-senpai! *blushu blushu*”. Guys swimming together, big deal). I’ve seen yaoi, it’s not my thing and it’s certainly nothing like this. And if this turned into a yaoi? I’d still watch it. Just like I would if a het couple came out of any other anime. Because it should be that normal.
So your favourite studio’s not catering towards you for one season? Maybe be less of a stubborn, nitwit baby and go watch another studio’s anime. KyoAni isn’t the only one with gems. Or hey, rewatch one of your old favourites, buy a manga series you haven’t read or maybe play some video games. Your whole life isn’t over because of Free!. Let us women have the one anime which actually caters toward us sexually. We can get turned on by 2D characters too y’know.

That’s way too over-the-top and you know it. Think of the shopping mall as the entirety of all anime, and the shops as genres. With every genre there’s a target audience. The shops should therefore meet the desires of that target audience. A man demanding that women should all wear lingerie instead of normal clothes is nothing like what we are doing – we are asking for an upgrade to our store, because all this ‘shoujo’ stuff still has us grinning and bearing the pantyshots and jiggling boobs (which, by the way, is actually an insanely painful thing for your boobs to do. Even A-Cups are heavy). And they’re taking our feedback on board and giving that to us. Why should you care? You have all these other stores, and are even greeted into our stores while we are shooed out of yours by people like you. Now which one of our metaphors is more accurate?

For one thing women as well as men are often shown as both sexy AND strong in anime, although I admit a lot of times the "weak and cute" type is more popular than any kind of sexy/slutty female. A lot of otaku actually hate even 2D girls who dress "slutty".
