Index, owner of the once-proud Atlus brand, has finally declared bankruptcy after managing to pile on 24.5 billion yen of debt through a protracted and seemingly random IT-themed acquisition spree.
The news comes as no surprise given the scale of the losses they posted earlier in the year, and the bankruptcy proceedings look likely to result in a complicated and protracted sell-off of their various assets rather than any outright dissolution.
For Persona fans it is of course likely that the only matter of any consequence is which publisher buys up the remains of Atlus and whether the studio ever actually manages to produce a Persona title for a modern console.
Index itself seems to show little interest in hanging on to Atlus or its video game business, its court-submitted rehabilitation plan hopelessly mentioning only “smartphones” and “social games” as its path to solvency.
So far speculation centres on Koei as the most likely buyer, and although there is as yet no confirmation from Koei themselves, they do at least enjoy a very healthy balance sheet.

Persona 5 will probably sell like hot pancakes no matter how good it will actually be. The brand name alone is worth a whole lot. Compile Heart should buy it. Upgrade Neptunia V graphics for nex-gen and pump out those Persona games.
>Compile Heart
So cruel…
Compile Heart doesn't have that kind of money lol, even if it's sad. They could make Persona 5 more MOE.
They are a subsidiary of Idea Factory, so they don't even have that kind of power.
Persona 5, the characters will be sucked into videgame consoles where they'll be involved in the battle between consoles shadows! ...I'd buy that!
Will Square Enix be next to suffer this fate?
I guess Touma couldn't save her this time.
Guess this problem couldn't be solved by giving a speech and punching someone in the face.
It's not too late, everyone call for our hero!

But even so
Index will still has the third season right?
if he stops talking about his index finger like its another person.
or rather, another persona :D
then your dreamy idealist might be able to have a free sea- son.
Index probably will get a third season but it will probably never finish accurately to the light novel.
If she does not use up the budget on food.
I think the "guess who'll be next" is actually referring to Squeenix...
SquareENext...
Yeah, given that they've actually been more in debt than Index for a long while now...
SE should buy them. They will remake the Persona series in their own image.
You are a moron!
I rather not see any of those damn companies squeenix and nintenfuck buy Atlas. Too much sexy loliness they'll take away.
No, fuck those two companies!
I'd rather see Nintendo buy Atlus than Fuckup-Enix. At least then the games would be quality titles. Although...
1. They'll be forever on Nintendo systems, which will cause Sonyggoers to catatonia-rage (full of lulz for everyone!)
2. America will have to beg, demand, and our-right threaten NoA with physical and sexual violence for them to release Atlus games on American shores. And even then, it'll only be in the U.S. and only via Game Stop.
3. References to "Ragnarok" will be changed to "Kangaroo".
4. Mario will become the ultimate Persona.
5. We'll see some really odd-ball alterations between eastern-and-western releases. Much like the design changes done in Revelations: Persona on the PS1...
Good lord I hope not, Squaresoft hasn't made a decent game in years, the only decent stuff from that alliance has been from the Enix side.
I honestly hope this does happen to Square Enix. They're far too bloated for their own good, and they're trying to be like the Japanese Activision or EA Games, but are taking a bite too big to swallow. Their games have been mostly shit for the last decade and all of the good ones in the last 3 years are from various studios that they bought. hopefully Atlus gets bought by a decent company, maybe Konami.
Propably not anytime soon.
There are 3 cash cows with particular capital Fs in the making.
the best thing that could happen is that Square Enix split up and became again two separate corporation, that way maybe good games could come out and not another (shitty) episode of FF...
the people who made the good square games are long gone mostly so a split would hardly solve anything. It would likely just create financial issues.
Square Enix is a safe bet. But Sony Entertainment is also on the top of the list.
Sony Entertainment is fine. It's about the only branch of Sony that is, actually. It also doesn't make video games (SE is the movie and music division). The video game division is Sony Computer Entertainment (which, confusingly, is not part of Sony Entertainment).
Sony Insurance was the money making business unit last year.
http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-05-28/news/39580325_1_kazuo-hirai-electronics-business-trinitron
>Its financial arm accounts for 63 per cent of Sony's total operating profit last year. Life insurance has been its biggest moneymaker over the last decade, earning the company 933 billion yen ($9.07 billion) in operating profit in the 10 years that ended in March.
>Sony's film and music divisions, which produced hits like the Spider-Man movies and "Zero Dark Thirty" and recorded musicians like the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the electronic music duo Daft Punk, have contributed $7 billion to the company's bottom line over the last decade.
>In that time, Sony's electronics division has lost a cumulative $8.5 billion.
Sony needs to reorganize itself if it wants to survive. Buying crap performing gaming companies isn't the right path.
Looking at the recent chain of gaming studio closing down in the west, seems to me the whole gaming industry is being shaken up and not just in Japan.
I thought they were the same thing!
Safe bet my ass. Squeenix is dead. They just don't realize it. I won't be surprised if they file for bankruptcy if FFXV fails.
FFXV Online is TERRIBLE. Quest Complete pop-ups, god-damn invisible walls lame ass system. It's gay and I hope it fails so square closes their doors.
IAWTC
I hope they just go die faster. Someone have to free xenogears from their clench and make a decent remake including the budget-cut disc 2 parts
dont think so, Sony got huge movie industry and Blu Ray is huge. Sony are far off from crashing.
@5:49
Sony is very safe on the console business I'd say - the PS4 is likely to dominate over the new CrapBox. And Blu-ray didn't fail, there's a lot of sales.
Blu-ray isn't huge it failed to replaced DVD and it itself will be replaced by digital.
Sony has already crash they just haven't burned and collapsed yet.
Atlus stated that Index's bankruptcy won't affect them.
that's Atlus USA.. to be specific.. and those only publish the games.
But on the long run it's about developers, and developers will be affected by whatever happens next, silly.
Atlus Japan have said the same thing. But all they've really said in either case is that it won't affect the scheduled release of upcoming games (which it wouldn't, since the bankruptcy process is long, and Index will probably be run by a court-appointed receiver in the interim, but otherwise should continue more-or-less normal operations).
Their parent company being in trouble most certainly will effect them. They're just spitting out PR lines to keep fans from panicking and abandoning them.
Persona Musou next? Fuck yeah.
that's interesting....but yeah where is my persona 5
I thought exactly the same.
Penis Musou.
I hope somebody else picks up Atlus besides Tecmo/Koei.
They will DLC you to death and then release the newest version a few months later, then sell more DLC on that.
In that case scratch Bandai Namco from the list too, and EA, Sega wouldnt even release games nor they have the money to buy anything.
i highly doubt a person which actually knows the situation would talk about their money
The more Persona I can get, the better.
This happens to companies that are run by bean-counters who have lost touch with their public. It also happens to countries where the leaders have lost touch with the people. Yeah, I'm talking to you, Mr. President.
