The REAL Sohara died when Tomoki was a child, that violent tsundere was a fake.
Chapter 68 we met the real Sohara, before she died. At first it seemed like she died because they went into the past, but that's not what happened. She died regardless of their interference because Tomoki takes her home not knowing her parents aren't there to take her to the hospital.
This is why earlier it is unveiled that Sohara used to be very sickly and frail. When the fake took her place, all her health problems disappeared and her personality changed to match the 'angel' impersonating her.

Well I have always thought that Sora no Otoshimono (the anime adaptation anyway) had plenty of quite heart-rending/serious drama moments.
IT always have a serious heart rending story plot just waiting around the corner between the perverted and comedic chapters, just waiting to pop out to remind us that this manga is not just about perverted comedic moments.
For me, I love this "carrot and stick" approach.
Messiah-sama was also very sad at times.

I once read the first few chapters of Sora no Otoshimono and it was relatively light-hearted, goofy fare that I stopped reading for some reason or other a few chapters in and then forgot about it. This was some years back.
Then, I started buying this magazine a few months back for some unrelated manga I was interested in and saw that SnO was in it and when I looked at those chapters, its all angst and death and crying...what the hell happens between the start and now?! Actually rekindles my interest in it a bit.
