Final Fantasy fans are decrying the complete death of the franchise and the last vestiges of Square with it, after Nomura’s reassurances that “it may be an action game, but you mustn’t forget it is Final Fantasy!” provide unambiguous confirmation of it not even being an action RPG.
Nomura had this to say in a recent interview:
It is being presented as “a Final Fantasy action game,” but I wasn’t thinking of it like that.
True, we did want to get rid of the UI, remove hit counters, restrict the playable character to Noct and so on. But if we did all it that it would become just another action game like all the others.
The team is saying, “don’t forget this is Final Fantasy before it is an action game.”
In response to the question “so what is Final Fantasy?” he also manages to avoid mentioning RPGs at all:
I think it is thinking about the numbers while fighting in a party. “FF” is different to existing action games and FPSes, you can see the quantity of damage you’re taking and inflicting, and how much you are healing. Managing those numbers is the “thinking about the numbers” part.
And in FFXV you can switch freely between 3 characters, so it is also about party combat. There are lots of combos and you need to be aware of characters outside the party.
Few will be in danger of forgetting what it is in any case, as the game’s content and character designs are also attracting criticism – with the all-male and exceedingly “Nomurish” cast in particular being dismissed as “another one of Nomura’s host gangs” and “completely lacking any female presence” (which he concedes himself, saying “yes, it’s nothing but guys, although there is one new girl”):
Hey, if SquareEnix doesn’t release one new FF title each and every month, does that mean “franchise death”? No it doesn’t.
If they try to innovate, does that mean franchise death? No it doesn’t. Mario survived after DokiDoki Panic, right?
well, Final Fantasy died. Turn based FF died already at FFX 🙁 Fucking s♥♥t.
If this ends up being the true Bouncer 2. They just might be saved.
Am I the only person who is excited for every aspect of FFXV? It’d be nice to see the franchise take a turn back to its classic roots, yea, but thank GOD they’re leaving behind the FNC universe after XV. XIII may have been disappointed for fans, but it did extremely well outside of the classic fans. Square isn’t going anywhere JUST because original fans have lost hope. There are still people who love XIII and can’t stand the older ones, and the same thing will happen with XV. It’s going to bring in a whole new group of fans. I was disappointed with XIII for the pointless story, horrible characters and annoying linearity of just about every aspect… but there are so many who loved it actually, and being that it has gotten “best of” releases on PS3 and 360 has to mean something.
So, just because butthurt fans of old are going to angst about how Nomura only caters to teen girls and gay guys and how the classic, turn-based ATB isn’t going to be in effect doesn’t mean the game is going to suck.
Bring me back the OLD Final Fantasy!
again??? how many times now… -_-‘
FFVI is actually getting rereleased again on 3DS now
My Goodness you sure!?
