The phrase "Anime is..." rarely leads an accurate statement. The media format (dear normals: it's not a genre) encompasses a lot of diversity.
So it would be wrong for me to suggest TLR is a shining beacon for anime.
It would, however, be well within reason for me to say that TLR is a representative masterpiece for one of the most recognized areas of anime culture: Ecchi.
It's shallow, it's unrealistic, it's cliche, and I WOULD NOT CHANGE A DAMN THING ABOUT IT.
I would actually be worried if TLR WAS deep, realistic and original. You know something has gone terribly wrong when anime from a genre not specialized in plots gets the upper hand precisely on that aspect compared to other animes that actually try to be serious, but fail miserably at it, and I can name quite a few of those only from past 2 years.
So, yes, I agree: I would not change this anime, either.

This anime has the best fan service I've ever seen while being really interesting at the same time, love it!! My only complaint is...NOT ENOUGH NANA-CHAN!!!

LxB didn't have a good plot to be honest. My favorite was Seikon no Qwaser. It had a fucking *plot* AND fanservice galore, albeit a bit too much of a single kind.
I still enjoyed LxB, but I prefer Kanokon over it much, much more, which is made by the same creators.
SnQ is easily another one of my favorites, as is Manyuu Hikenchou.
I watched to the end, but I have to say I think TLRD lacked the sparkle of the other series. The ecchi bits were nice, but much of the rest was a fricken slideshow.
Whole thing had a 'winding down' vibe to it.
This anime takes it fansercice so far to the extreme that even censoring is not doing it's job right, the censoring of the ice cream scene was dangerous close to looking like something it shouldn't.
This creator should really consider on tuning it down bit for both anime and manga.
