AKB48 idol Haruka Shimazaki‘s efforts to emulate the virtual beauty of holographic princess Hatsune Miku with some rather unflattering makeup and cosplay have been less than well received by Miku fans, so much so that some have been given to wonder if it is not a deliberate ploy…

Dont know why everyone is over-reacting. Its mainly the eye makeup that makes it look so bad. That style never looks good on anyone; there are much better ways to create the illusion of bigger eyes. Putting the eyeliner about a cm under your actual eye, however, just makes it look like you're really old/tired.
She'd probably look better if she did the eye makeup in another way.

If it were any other girl in Japan then people wouldn't care nearly as much. It's just because she's in AKB48 that this is getting more attention than it honestly should.
Then again, that's how it always is with AKB48 in regards to anything that they do. Their fanbase -- and subsequentially their non-fanbase -- is just so huge that everything they do is magnified on a very large scale. "Normal" just doesn't apply to anything they do. Everything is just magnified until it either becomes seemingly really good or really bad. And, because of that, everything gets attention -- even the things that "normally" wouldn't.
It's just one of those things that can't even be helped.
Thus their incomprehensible success :/

That's not the only issue here.
The hair plays a pretty big part of it as well. Her facial structure and Miku's hairstyle aren't a very good combination on her, in my opinion.
The overall image seems to draw particular attention to her nose. When coupled with the hair and makeup, it just makes her seem almost... pig-ish. It just seems unflattering, really.
If they really wanted to try this out on an AKB girl, it probably would've helped things a bit if they'd chosen cuter one.
I mean, she's cute enough on her own, but... there were better options they could've chosen.
Especially from AKB48's mob of cute girls.
Not to mention that you can see her real hairline because she isn't wearing the wig in a proper way.
She'll probably look better if she went to school contributed to society and created the illusion of a college degree.

Yes, I think we can pretty much all agree that the cosplay is bad, but she's an attractive enough girl when she's not lathered in makeup and dressed up like a really bad doll. Also, her dye job in the doesn't help that much either considering the color is unflattering on her.
But... ignoring that...
Her other photoshoots are pretty good in my opinion, which is something considering I normally dislike everything AKB48.
