China Elevator Beheads Woman

Grisly security camera footage of a woman being beheaded in a packed elevator has prompted yet more safety concerns about China’s rapidly rising cities.
The elevator, installed in a Shenzhen office building, beheaded a nurse as she attempted to get off:
In response to the incident, authorities have promised to inspect the city’s 100,000 elevators – although their promise to have it done in only 15 days may give some pause.
Aside from the cool and almost unimpressed reaction of the other passengers, this being China much attention has centred on the unknown maker of the elevator – and whilst it may be reassuring to blame China quality manufacture or maintenance, the small cartel of transnational companies which make most of the world’s elevators have a less than perfect safety record.

Fuck what a terrible thing, normally this should never be able to happen with a properly programmed PLC. Did they use a micro-controller for it or something? Just a wonky timer?
It runs on China quality
China, please improve. I'm really scarred about this event.
Natural selection
So if rock lands on your head (flying from some truck or something) and you die it's natural selection too? Dumb ass.
At least she didn't suffer.
Wow, I knew if I scrolled down enough I would fine the non pun comment.
A+
Elevators have proprietary PLC systems. A screw up in the firmware can cause this or just poor design in the electronics.
Probably a mechanical error. Software has the boring tendency to just silently die instead of spectacularly failing in the most damaging way possible. I blame Turing for that.
It runs on Arduino.
I also vote for mechanical error. I guess the mechanical locks failed. There are four of them on the corners of the elevator. They engage when stopped at a floor or if the cable fails. It was a temporary failure since the elevator did stop at it's next stop. Can't really think of a reason why it would fail outside of some weird power anomaly that caused it to let go.
@ Anon 19:53 ("mechanical locks"):
I knew a guy in college (1980s) who had an outside job writing software to control sawmills. He told me his worst mistake resulted in running a multi-ton log carriage off the rails. I asked him, "What about the limiter switch?"
His reply: "The computer IS the limiter switch."
In this elevator design, did the "mechanical locks" directly interrupt the power, or were they merely an input into the elevator control circuitry (which the computer could ignore or override)?
if i may add my senf... maybe its completely unrelated.

'merely an input into the elevators controll circuitry'
Is anything in China not lethal?
Probably the rat poison.
the sewer.
Since everything else explodes I bet the actual explosives don't.
nothing is safe in china
ok check, not the sewers
I think this site is biased. I've been seeing most of the articles posted in this site being just negative things happening in China. I cant even count the number of good things they have posted about China anyways.

the knives
All their weapons systems and explosives.

Their bombs, don't worry, it won't explode like EVERYTHING ELSE !
fart bomb, lol
If China ever goes to war it'd be hilarious to see them throw watermelons instead of grenades and plant sewers instead of mines.
Chinese army?
CHUN-LI ARMY!!!!!!!!!!

'cool and almost unimpressed'?
They seemed shocked and extremely unhappy to me. What would you have preferred, Artefact, a panic?
its Like resident evil 1 movie..
the sewage.
Nope the sewage is explosive as we all know so it's lethal also.
Butm they have made it into cooking oil before, so you know that it is edible.
You won't have to worry about their bombs...
well, they have 1~9 seconde (totally random)grenades, have to try your luck
-> waiting for exploding pillows
We got pillows made from trash. Close enough.
How is that different from the rest of the world through? Nearly everything can kill, given the right circumstances.
Everything can kill, but in China everything does kill.
The elevator was of Swiss design. Things like this happen everywhere.
And think people don't die in freak accidents elsewhere? Do I need to Google "elevator death" for you?
Just because the elevator is of Swiss design does not mean this happens "everywhere." They have admitted that the safety inspection permits were out of date and with the amount of shifty work we see in Chinese architecture it wouldn't surprise me that a few safety features were ignored when this elevator was being installed.
even if it was of swiss design, the chinese probably built it and used inferior materials. i'm just glad it was blurred. i don't want to be sick before breakfast. they probably used mcdonalds straws daisychained instead of steel cable for the elevator's pulley system.
Dont you know that elevators are population control mechanisms ?
ppl like focus on China in general. if these happens in India, no one cares
You have a point, but only to a point. To say these things can happen anywhere you would be right, but to say that freak accidents do not happen disproportionately in China you would be wrong. Though to be fair China does have a large population and so these things will happen more often.
@hikari welcome to sankaku
No shit, you're in Sankaku , everything observed in Japan. Go to BBC.com
China brought these jokes onto it's self because of things like cheap counterfeit and knock off products, which china is practically the country that started it all. Not to mention the cheap labor which makes so much of what we buy come with the label "made in china", and a lot of those things are made with cheap materials to keep the prices low.
I actually know someone who will not buy anything if he sees the label "made in china" on it, because he said everything he's owned with that label has screwed up in some way. I have to say I think he was being unreasonable and exaggerating things, but he grew up in a country in Africa so maybe Chinese products there were way more worse.
Yea but I can't think of other places in the world where you can be sitting on a chair, and it explodes up your ass. It was a chair like a chair you'd see in school.
