The immunity to prosecution, job security and legendary perks enjoyed by Japanese teachers are again in the news, in the unusual case of a teacher who actually managed to lose his job by having sex with one of his pupils at school, also taking her home for good measure.
A male teacher in his twenties teaching at an Oita prefecture middle school was found to have engaged in indecent activities with one of his pupils at his apartment and in the school itself.
The pair became intimate after exchanging mails (although why they were engaged in such an exchange in the first place is not clear), there apparently not having been a monetary aspect to the relationship.
After the girl’s parents found out she was having sex with her teacher they informed the school, who launched an investigation.
The local educational authority claims they did not want her antics to expose her antics, so they have withheld the identity of the teacher and the school at which it occurred.
The teacher has been sacked but faces no other action, saying “My conduct was inexcusable.” For reasons which are not clear, the 50-year-old school principal was also punished with the loss of a month’s pay.
