Xbox One “Clearly Inferior” To PS4, Sony Stock Surges

xbox-one

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is already being heralded as the victor of the 8th generation console war, as news of just how poor Microsoft’s Xbox One offering is have begun to sink in, with poor specs, a pathetically weak games line-up, excessive emphasis on TV rather than games, no backwards compatibility and no support for used games all combining to offer a massive boost to Sony’s share price.

The latest hardware comparison information, still not officially confirmed but widely believed to be correct based on earlier leaks:

PS4
・CPU: Jaguar 8 Core CPU @ 2.0GHz
・GPU: Radeon GPU @ 1.84TFLOPS
・Memory: 8GB GDDR5 @ 176GB/s
■Features:
・Backwards compatible with previous PS* games
・Can remote play on PSV
・PlayStation Eye
・Supposedly plays used games
・Est. price: $300-$500
・Has a Share button!

Xbox One
・CPU: Jaguar 8 Core CPU @ 1.6GHz
・GPU: D3D 11.1 GPU @ 1.2TFLOPS
・Memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 68GB/s
■Features:
・No backwards compatibility
・Now has Blu-ray & TV support, in the US at least
・Kinect
・Plays used games if you pay again
・Est. price: $300-$500
・Has Windows 8!

Presumably these specs are regarded as sufficient for watching TV, playing EA Sports titles and waiting to connect to the latest cloud gaming extravaganza, but there are major doubts as to them putting up serious competition to the PS4 as time progresses – although the possibility of MS simply bribing developers to restrict the graphics of multi-platform titles to Xbox One levels has also been raised.

As if all this were not bad enough, Microsoft has also confirmed what had been amongst the worst fears for the PlayStation 4it will not play used games, unless the user pays a ransom to let them register the game on their Xbox Live account:

Individual games will be tied to Xbox Live accounts, Microsoft said, meaning that the software giant can detect whether a game has been sold to a retailer and repurchased, or handed from one friend to another. In such instances, the second user must pay a fee.

“On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” a Microsoft representative told Wired.

The company added that, once discs are installed on the hard drive, games can be played without a disc being in the tray.

The Wired article then elaborates:

“What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.”

The news that Sony has likely already won the console war for the entire next generation sent their stock surging even as Microsoft’s announcement continued:

when you think "radians" 1 comes after 360 degrees, 2 after 720 degrees and so on. On top of it their slogan is that everything's on "One" place... Even if it sounds stupid it makes sense.

Ummm... No. That is completely and utterly wrong. 1 radian is about 57 degrees. it is the full 360 degree circle divided by 2*pi, 2*pi*radius being the full circumference.

You do realize that EA has new management right? ANd that they've already killed online pass right? Who's to say that EA won't actually get better; Remember that time when EA for a short time got WAY BETTER since they put in an ACTUALLY GOOD CEO? I'm hoping it gets better. AND by the way; EA is with BOTH Sony AND Microsoft; Their TRUE partnership that was announced today was NFL... Don't get why you are all up in a tissy about this.

EA only killed their online pass because Microsoft will be charging a fee to play used games on the X1. The online pass was used as a method to earn money on used games - so by killing it, they've changed nothing. EA is still as greedy as they've always been.

It seems that the fashion of the 4 generation consoles will be black and square.
When you think that the design progresses with time, everyone ends up with face game CUBE
Well .. do not play with the appearance but the hardware inside, sadly designers could work a little harder

It doesn't in the literal sense.

You can buy older games again to play on the streaming service(we've yet to see how well that works), or so is planned.

Microsoft has said that they have no plans for backwards compatibility at the moment.

Still, despite the fact the PS4 itself doesn't support backwards compatibility - at least it has got the option to stream the games to it integrated in it (hello Gaikai).

How the hell they exactly want to do it - I dunno. But it seems the lesser of two evils to me. At least as an outsider and at the moment.

Cloud service work just like backward compatibility.. which the purpose is to enable gamer to play PS1/2/3 games on PS4..

The service quality or the internet/server down issue, however, will remain a hard to tackle problem.

I guess this is the best solution Sony can come up, bringing ability to play older PS games without skyrocketing the price of PS4, which will happen if PS4 have built in backward compatibility (by putting PS3 cell processor inside PS4)

Why be pissed. Odds are when you have to buy your old ps1 and 2 games they won't cost very much (ps store for example). Additionally remember when everyone bitched about the PS3's price? That was because they were trying to do too much. This way they can keep their price in line with the Xbox and for the people who want to can buy their older games w/o effecting the people who don't.

No, that information is incorrect, The PS4 is not backwards compatible in physical sense, you can't place your PS1, PS2 or even PS3 discs inside it (well you can, but it doesn't work), they did say that they would be looking into the PS1 and PS2 classics support, but that the PS3 games are made in a different way and they simply cannot make the games work on the console since the insides from hardware to operating system are so different that they wont be able to work on it.
I think i did read somewhere that they would look into the PS3 as digital media in the future but at this moment they have no plans for it.

Yeah, between the emotion engine and cell processor, Sony's had some weird hardware to work with for backwards compatibility.

Hell, it's pretty impressive that they managed to make the PS3 emulate PS2 titles. PS2 emulation on PC can get goofy at times, let alone getting it to work on the cell processor and generally pretty garbage specs.

Cell it's self was a beast of a CPU in it's heyday in 2006 but the rest of the PS3 the GSX and the amount of memory was as best mediocre.
It seems they're really trying to make sure they don't run short of memory this time around by giving it 8GB though Jaguar is a fairly mediocre CPU for 2013.

The reason the early PS3s could play PS2 games was because they weren't emulating, Sony put an emotion engine chip in the console. They did not include them in the slim and forward (presumably to cut costs), which is why the PS3 suddenly lost its backwards capability.

Slim PS3 and onward have complete software emulation of PS2, and it works pretty well. IF THAT can do it. THE PS4 CAN CERTAINLY DO BETTER.

    PS1 is a no brainer considering it's basically 100% perfect on PS3

Remember people, PS3 launched with the promise on backward compatability.

As we welcome the PS4, how many PS2 titles actually run on the PS3? Assuming of course we don't homrbrew them?

Sony promised the moon, and never bothered to deliver. I'm not confident in their ability to do so for this.

actually I own the original PS3 that launched and it still plays ALL, my PS2 games, the only thing that pisses me off is they took away the ability to make it a linux based system...the first two iterations of PS3 were 100% backwards compatible with ps2 and mostly backwards compatible with ps1 game. But then they brought out "Cheaper versions" which had software emulator, then they took out backwards compatibility all together. So They didn't go back on their promise, as it was Backwards compatible at launch...they just withdrew their promise, later on.

Your still forgetting that they withdrew their promise of Backwards compatibility to make the console cheaper; too many people whining that they want it cheaper and slimmer. It's like people buying an Economic/Budget Car and expect it to be a V8 Muscle Car or a Ferrari/Lamborghini.

    Comment by Anonymous
    03:43 23/05/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

That's why I stopped buying Sony consoles/handhelds: they release too many revised consoles!
The PS1 had like 2 different models and some minor altered versions, the PS2 was similar (big models with some smaller changes, and the Slim)... PS3 also had the big original and Slim, but there were many revised versions with important changes concerning the hardware. The PSP was the same. I bought the original, soon after they released the Slim and then another model... and always changing stuff, adding some and removing others...
As a consumer I don't want to buy every new model they release. I want to buy it once and be happy; if there is a better version several years later, when my old one begins to deteriorate, I'll consider a Slim... but I'm not interested in watching the market to see when a new model gets released, which features each one has and which is superior... at the same time looking out for price drops and such -_-
