Some wags have suggested the 5 second limit may not be such a problem as no Chinese take any notice of the signals anyway – although more fair-minded Japanese have also pointed out their own country has employed signals giving pedestrians as little as 3 seconds to dash across before the ascendancy of their automotive overlords is reaffirmed:
