PS4 Revealed as “Square”

Sony has finally revealed a fleeting and rather indistinct glimpse of their social wonder-console the PlayStation 4, though the suspense over the console’s design which they have so assiduously cultivated looks set to continue until its formal unveiling on the 10th of June – so far all that has been gleaned from their new video is that it “square.”

    you want another $600 console?
consoles excel at optimization which programmers do better for consoles and programming for the x86 is much easier than the ps3's cell processor

Just waiting on the $350 to $400 price point announcement

    Comment by Dark Mage
    14:28 21/05/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

Ram will likely price it in to the $600 range.
The main CPU though X86 is not much easier then Cell.
It's 8 Botcat core pretty much equivalent to the Intel Atom.
Getting speed out of it might even be trickier since it's single thread performance should be about 1/3 to 1/2 that of the PPE in Cell.
Anything complex will have to be very multi threaded for speed this even includes video codecs that are not very GPU bound.
In short it's a lazy and cheap design that probably cost them next to nothing in R&D.

It's not desperation, it's called stealing your rivals thunder. Way more hype for the ps4 then the xbox so far, and Sony knows it.

So they troll MS on the eve of their big day. Classic, and seems to be working.

We'll see how much of that remains when the XBox actually launches, especially given that the PS4 video is so scant on details.
Personally though, I only care about the games.

Yeah, consoles are only a means to provide entertainment, what's important are the games, not the console they're on. Graphics aren't even an issue these days anyway and I'd prefer a console that's not bogged down by useless features and a cluttered dashboard.

Which the new Xbox will lack focus on, seeing that they're making the new xbox more of a media center for the livingroom.

Yet all the ps4 is doing is copying features that have already been done. Xbox already had indy game support, social app support, smartglass and i didn't care then. Why should i care now that its Sony's only gimmick.

What I think is sad is how obvious it is that Sony is rushing their product. Who has a reveal without a reveal?

    @ 15:10
Smartglass is a gimmick. Not all devices have Xbox styled control output so what's the point? Must you also be a Live Gold member to use that?

Sharing videos of gameplay is something Sony is endorsing with the PS4, unlike Nintendo's backwardness.

    >Rushing product.

They revealed first. Rush am confirmed. Puhlease, try to come up with a legit argument. You're basically admitting that the 360 was rushed as it was also teh first, and had the highest failure rate of any console in history as it's birthmark for being rushed.

You're really butthurt over the same thing that Microsoft did to PS3's launch and other related events this gen. This is just Sony playing the MS game. They revealed first and now they're going to hype their own machine to the discredit of the other. Xbox fans...

the console matters quite a bit, granted they alreay told us everything that matters, 8core amd with a 7850 equivalent gpu and 8gb gddr5 the shape... not so much... well... the 360 has holes on the top for cooling, and the ps3 is curved so you cant fucning put anything on top of them... which for some people is very important.

8 AMD e series cores it's a glorified netbook chip.
The performance should be equivalent to a quad core chip from 2008.

As for the GPU being equivalent to a 7850 I doubt it as the memory bandwidth must be shared with the CPU.

Jaguar is more or less a die shrink of Bobcat which was made to compete with Atom and the VIA Nano.

Still it should be a step up from the PS3 because of GPGPU features in the graphics chip.

Though if they wanted low power they might as well went with several arm cores.

    16:25 21/05/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

After reading a bit more, it's actually two 4 core AMD "Jaguar" chips running in tandem. It's still a netbook chip but they fixed most of the major design problems of the bobcat and added modern instruction sets. Should be decently fast if game code is optimized properly.

Memory bandwidth isn't a problem either since they're using GDDR5 and a specialized 256 bit memory controller for both system and video. I've seen figures quoting six times more memory bandwidth than an i7 running DDR3-1600.

Assuming each chip has its own graphics core, it would be like running some kind of crossfire setup. Could be fun.

Maybe Zura meant the outer appearance.. which not that matter to me. It can be cube, it can be triangle or circle shape, or pink in color but as long it provide great game I can get on board with that.

Yeah... I don't care about the specs of a console. I've been following the console generations for 20 years now and the last console worth its money was the PS2 (IMO). The GC didn't have many great games, first XBox had some good things.
The following generation lost me absolutely: I don't care about "activity games" or party/sing/sports titles, so the Wii was uninteresting to me (just to play Zelda, Mario and some exclusives I don't buy the Wii), also I owned eyetoy for the PS2 and it was a waste of money.
As I could afford only one console, it came down to either PS3 or 360. As I love JRPGs, I bought the 360, which had quite some exclusive JRPGs. Most of them got ported to the PS3 later with additional content, sucks. Well... most other games were released on both consoles, so there isn't much to talk about. The games I own (around 30 discs for the 360 + some from marketplace) are not that great.
If I could keep only 3-5 games, there'd be no problem... on every older console I couldn't choose!
I don't care about the specs of the current gen either, it doesn't matter as the games aren't that great (IMO). I already don't care for the next gen and won't buy any console, even if it cost me only 100 Euro or came with who-cares-what-accessoires (Kinect, Move, 3D room creation thing, blabla).

Meh, I'll wait until they decide to release the "upgraded standard PS4" with better specs and memory. That way it'll last longer than half a year against it's own games.
