The latest entry into the Guilty Gear series has been revealed in the form of Guilty Gear Xrd, although the decision to introduce 3D to the traditionally hardcore 2D franchise by way of the Unreal Engine has caused something of an stir amongst the more purist fans…
well...the main complain is that 3D don't work well with crazy characters that deform they bodies too much (like mahvel venom, melty blood nero, blazblue arakune, skullgirls double, etc). Those characters are normaly redesign so that just a smal portion of their bodies deform or cutted from the game. For example, it looks like just a small portion of millia hair will have this efect. So guilty gear fans are really concerned about what they will do to zappa, eddie, faust, etc.
The good news is that the technology to do such things is always being expanded, so at least eventually they'll have a direct way, but it is a very complex thing to do without using a shit ton of deformers and even switching out models mid-animation, but it is possible.
probably a minor complaint, i know, but if they decided to go 3d, why is the animation still choppy?
i know youtube only shows 30fps, but this can't be 30fps animations
look at the animation around the 1 minute mark and wherever it slows down. i know its closer to the 3d versions animations, but the only reason 2d animation was choppy at points was because it was expensive to animate each thing, with 3d its not...
personal preference i would rather have this buttery smooth 60fps 3d cell shaded than emulating the 2d with 3d
I don't think your issue is with the framrate. To me the actual framerate of the game looks buttery smooth. What i think your saying as far as the animation goes is something that they have done purposely to retain the effect of 2d style frame animation.
Framerate vs Frames of animation
All that glare, fire, charge and other effects have always been in the previous games. Only this one looks like a thousand times more fucking amazing. :p
The cel shading is tricking us to not see the 3D, it's supposed to look 2D even though it technically isn't. The unreal engine is pretty much camouflaged, in a sense.
Holy shit, I didn't even realize that it was 3D models until they did the 3D rotation around it and I studied animation extensively as a professional. Anyone who's complaining about this is just complaining for the sake of trying hard to be purists. If every fighting game coming out decided to go this route I would not complain, period.
The 3D thing isn't the problem here. Sol's smile makes him look like pretty boy instead of the badass he is, and I didn't know the teenage girl was Ky until he started speaking. WHO THE HELL REDESIGNED THESE CHARACTERS?!
You can't imagine how much this means for Japanese game developers. Until now, they've been hugely limited in terms of what they can do within a low to mid-budget project because they've always had to build their engines from scratch.
The inability to use universal pre-built game engines is one of the key factors for why Japanese games in general have become so stale as of late. If game engines such as Unreal become more popular with Japanese devs, we might be looking at a whole another picture in 3-5 years.
That's not entirely true. Most big Japanese studios(Capcom, Konami, SE) have been using the pre-built engines such as Unreal and Havok this generation. Most, if not all, MMOs from Japan and Korea uses a pre-built engine. I know that Tera Online used Unreal.
Square Enix has already has Unreal Engine 3 and 4 and has plans to use it for future titles they plan to make.Already Konami has its own Engine known as Fox Engine they don't really need to use Unreal Engine.
Prebuilt engines are generally more powerful yeah, that and supported on a wide range of things. Still... The idea that they make an engine called the Idea Engine for fighting games, their own in particular is pretty funny.
people will never forget what they did to Kojima(9/11 proportions), open your eyes Sheep. Pure hatred for Konami will last 10+ years or until they... More
Is anyone actually complaining about the 3D? It looks fucking gorgeous. They really did a good job with the cel shading.
I think I just wept watching this trailer. The glorious hot tears.

Fine by me, as long the game reamins with 2D fighting style and doesn't lose its fast pace. <3

^ this. Also I really like that effect. IMO the first 3D engine displaying "2D" in a convincing way.
It's the video, not the game.
I haven't seen a single complaint until reading artefact's article actually, lol.
I think it looks great! They did a great job emulating the 2D style and animation of the original games, but in 3D. Very impressive.
But all that glare, fire, charge and other effects tend to obscure too much of what's going on.
All that glare, fire, charge and other effects have always been in the previous games. Only this one looks like a thousand times more fucking amazing. :p
I doesn´t look like 3D at all...
Artefact failed to mention "celshading". It's 3D made to look 2D. It's done it's job well before, so of course Arc Sys wouldn't screw that up!
Perhaps they deliberately made the artstyle that way. You know, to keep the purists in line.
Why should it matter though? As long as it looks good, and it clearly does here, that's all that matters.
then watch the trailer
Agreed. This barely counts as 3D, and even then it's just the backgrounds and some of the flashy moves.
The Unreal Engine is capable of so much more, it's disappointing to see it wasted.
they're not trying to make Gears of War, they're just using some of the advantages of 3D modeling for a 2D fighter.
like what we saw with SF4.
This tops SF4 so much.
The cel shading is tricking us to not see the 3D, it's supposed to look 2D even though it technically isn't. The unreal engine is pretty much camouflaged, in a sense.
Wasted? There office would get firebombed if they dared to take it much further than this.
GUYS GUYS GUYS!
DIZZY IN 3D!
*FAINTS*
I AM GOING TO LIKE THIS!
I'll see your Dizzy and raise you Bridget.
I see your Bridget, and raise you Jam
I thought Bridget could raise on his own?
...
I can't wait to see I-NO! :D <3
not odd at all. Joji nakata have alrady voiced sol numerous times, and is a veeery reliable voice actor.
Awesome for a lot of reasons.
I will learn how to not suck with you Zappa! I must!
A character who has the mannerisms/costume of a bunch of characters from JoJo and Vanilla Ice..
Yeah, Guilty Gear knows how to have fun, lol..
Holy shit, I didn't even realize that it was 3D models until they did the 3D rotation around it and I studied animation extensively as a professional. Shit looks badass! Fuck yeah!
Finally, 3D well done.
When I heard they were using the Unreal Engine, I couldn't help but wish they made their very own system and called it the Idea Engine.
You can't imagine how much this means for Japanese game developers. Until now, they've been hugely limited in terms of what they can do within a low to mid-budget project because they've always had to build their engines from scratch.

Ky look more girly now, How is that fucking possible?
mugen , ky-ko ... fuuuuuuuuu-...SION !
(knowing it's actually trunks VA doing ky's voice ..)
Estrogen injections.
And testicle removal.
*sigh*
Another fighting game that I will buy and have my asses handed to me on a golden platter while playing.
>Unreal Engine
At first I was
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
but then
>video
\(*. *)/
Maybe it's just me but it seems Dizzy made Ky more girly… :}
holy shit i remember this game... that last boss was a bitch! that chick with the guitar lol..
honestly i'm not sure if all the complaints about the ability of 3D to handle all the intricacies of 2D are even relevant anymore.
did everyone forget that Arc already started using 3D with BlazBlue?
now to be clear they used 3D modeling to create the individual frames, then it was all animated in a traditional 2D manner.
but nonetheless, all those crazy designed mutating characters that people are arguing can't be done in 3D...
well...
Arc's done them in 3D.
the individual frames at least.
what remains to be seen is if they can just do it all from beginning to end in 3D, but they're already halfway there.
wooo *o* a new guilty gear?
im suprised noone said that yet,Kiske looks like Saber now...and no Testament in trailer, whyyyy Q_Q
Because no one gives a shit about Testament.
Yeah, nobody gives a shit about the strongest pick in slash and accent core? Get real.
Strongest pick? You mean cheapest and worst designed, right?
