    Depends on the environment. It's quite rare even in anime for the characters to come up with something as "mom, you're such an ecchi for having borne me". The boring tantalization gets reinforced so that people watching the show may get a clue about what's it all there for. And that would be to help weaker parties reject courting from ones that could overpower them if others were not brought into the equation. So brought they are, for better or worse, and that's the reason characters shouldn't advertise their weak points, in a large enough crowd there's always someone on the take for that and the authors won't let you forget that.

    But if the distance shortens, the Youto way is the safer one.

    No point in going national over such trifles. To me, especially the male characters are just put through whatever the story calls for, and their - how should I say it - peculiarity - isn't the pivot point of the creative process. That way they turn into fish out of water in the more realistic settings, and into plot devices in the more freeform ones.
