Kinda, except it seems like the author is taking a -lot- more risks with Eren than we ever saw with Edward. And personally, I like that.

Everyone loves Mikasa. Its the only good thing to come out of this sadistic, bloodbath of an anime. I forgive her for sabotaging the MC's gear in the hopes that he fails his exams and ends up a civilian with her.

My guess: He cuts himself out of the Titan and he'll regenerate his arm and leg. Titans have an insane regeneration, so I think Eren is kinda a Titan himself. (Because it'd be dumb if he'd die now.)

I think we need a new trope for "building a character up purposefully so audience gains an attachment (some sob story or tragic background or love story) then ruthlessly chop them down". It's almost like the author is just fucking with the audience. "Hey check out this character's story. So sad/inspiring! Would be a same if something were to happen to them..."
They do have a trope for that.
From the comments alone I can list a good number of the tropes this show has.
1) 'Anyone can Die'
2) 'Break the Badass/Cutie'
3) 'Crapsack World'
4) 'Shoot the Shaggy Dog'
5) 'True Art is Angsty'
6) 'Dwindling Party'
7) 'The Hero Dies'
8) 'Changing of the Guard'
8-A) 'Decoy Protagonist'
Hell there's probably more I could find if I actually read the manga or watched the anime. But 3 of these tropes alone make me NOT want to watch it. "Boo Hoo people die, shit's real, get over it, quit bitching, grow a pair, not all endings are happy endings, not all heroes win." and all the other comebacks people have for that statement.
You can't wait to see who dies next? Good for you, I'm not complaining, I've actually seen a few things where the main protag dies and no I'm not talking about Dragon Ball Z/GT since death in that is practically pointless.
But when you purposely draw your audience to a character then immediately snatch them away permanently you become a Sadistic Author, call it 'Shock Story Telling' if you want to I call it bullshit.
Reader: "Why would you kill everyone off like that?"
Author: "...Because Fuck You, That's why."
Actually this is kind of my guess as well. Remember the bit were he had this flashback with his father experimenting on him. There's also that Mystery what actually is in that cellar that he never had the chance to look into.
Maybe his father was looking into Titan-Human experimentation and he is the first Human that was experimented on? I find it strange though, that aside from that feverish Flashback, nothing else leads to this ...
Well looking forward to the next Episodes. This Anime definetly reminds me of Claymore and I am enjoying every minute of it.

Yeah, it was. I forgot where... but it was on one of the magazine covers with Sankarea, Mikasa was wearing some kind of bikini... Or a boxing outfit of some kind, and she had like a 12-pack.
Don't care much about her though, I like Annie and Hanji better.
Hanji is probably a man... or rather, according to the author, his/her gender is "not clear." However, it looks like the anime will be making him/her unambiguously a woman.

WTF do people really not read the manga before watching the anime? Spoiler alert: SnK has more reveals than the TV show Lost(with almost as little follow up explanation so far) and more 'throw a dart, boom, secret cylon'.
Amazing concept though, a really special and entangling read. It's great that the anime is popular b/c there will be additional seasons and the manga started going batshit, Space Pope-blessed awesome around issue 32.
