Whatever giant anime Shingeki no Kyojin lacks in controversy, service or moe, it evidently more than makes up for in bloody death and shocking storyline, with viewers amazed at its willingness to kill off key characters in only the 5th episode and “first battle”…
Unless the show really did get a “bad end” in only its 5th episode, fans have been left to wonder who their new protagonist is, and how many more of the unfortunates they will get through:

Impressive as the two have in common at the end you are not become attached to any secondary CHARACTERS it may die in the next episode.

I think there will be a S2 out because the anime is following closely to the manga as you said and it's impossible to keep the whole story in only 25 episodes imo. Besides yet the manga isn't finished.

I watched 2 episodes and stopped. I could see this was another sicko twisted author like Stephen King who likes bad endings! I hate bad endings so I would not watch this show at all!
Really? The show was going for a real take on what would happen, there's no friendship power up here or any plot armor. PEOPLE. DIE. If you can't take that then by god GTFO of here and stay out.

Actually I don't really think the story is going for a bad ending, don't judge a book by its cover, even with constant death of characters, there are a great number of mangas where main or important characters are killed the moment you never expected, like Hughes in FMA.

Well not everybody likes bad endings. There are too many of them irl. No need to increase their number by fiction ones too.
Cowboy Bebop does not have a bad ending at all.
It is a little bit sad but not bad at all.
I like bad endings (like Cowboy Bebop) cuz they make the show more real, since real life always has a bad ending (death).
Yeah. I prefer main character succeeding in doing what he/she determine to do.
Bad ending kinda send a message of 'there are things that no matter how hard you try or determine, it never going to happen', thus lowering the viewer determination on pursuing real life things they wanted, afraid to take risk as it can be futile in the end.
I watch anime for laugh, for shock, for sadness, for happy, for romance, for cool moment and not watching the main character tries very hard for 11 episode, only to get crushed badly in the end.
I bet they deserved it.

Macross did it first when they killed off Roy Focker so Hikaru Ichijyo could take the spotlight.
Pretty much the same story in the Robotech adaptation.

Though Hokuto no Ken actually had a legitimately great story and the main hero didn't die. It was hardly full of as much death (to non-villains) as these other "shock anime" like gantz.

At least with TTGL I felt like Kamina was just a side character anyway. Like he was just there to help Simon grow some balls and he died once he wasn't needed anymore.
Would the show still be popular if they killed Yoko in that scene instead?
Actually I was stating that killing a main character can serve an important purpose in storytelling.
Kamina was badass from the start. He didn't train or work hard much. But the main char in this anime worked hard only to meet his end...

I donno. Main character die is alright for me, but the real protagonist? No. Protagonist is the one that reader suppose to get attached/vouching/cheering the most, taking that away kill the series.
Killing Simon and Kamina will take the spice out of Guren Lagan for me. What's the point to show them struggling in beginning, but manage to keep moving forward, if the end they die and did nothing significant.
Kamina did die, but his teaching and word live inside Simon, and he pop up in spirit form some sot did help at the very end of the saga.
In short, main character die- OK.
Protagonist die- KO.
That is how it work for me anyway
