Japan’s latest teaching scandal, involving a youthful teacher who worked part-time at a “health” establishment in order to pay off her vast card debts, is currently exercising the imagination of many.
The 29-year-old Osaka high school teacher accrued huge credit card debts from purchases of clothes and cosmetics, and her teaching salary apparently proved unable to pay them off – at one point being some 2 million yen in arrears.
In order to pay off her debts, she resolved to work as a part-time “hotel health” girl at one of Osaka’s vast number of brothels, over a 6 month period managing to earn 1.6 million yen.
Having kept her debts secret from her family and having only contact with her patrons during her “health” work, she reasoned that both her money troubles and perilous choice of sideline would remain a secret.
However in March the local education board received an anonymous mail tipping them off as to her sideline, resulting in an “unprecedented and inexcusable scandal,” according to officials, who also sympathetically claim that “she resisted sex work but the demands of making the payments forced her into it.”
The teacher admits her sideline, saying “it was inexcusable to my students.”
Even being an active prostitute is not quite enough to result in the sacking of a Japanese teacher however – she has received a 6 month suspension from her teaching post.
There is a fair amount of sympathy for her tale online, although it appears she has thus far been spared them digging up profile pictures from her brothel’s site:

A lot of people just can't handle credit cards. They see it like free money so they can live a rock star lifestyle that they can't really afford until they get the bill.
Makes me glad my parents taught me about finances from a young age. I have two cards with decent limits in case of emergency but I only ever use them for the odd tank of gas or maybe restaurant bill. Anything else I might want, I save up for and buy when I have cash to spare. Having no debt above my head and not paying stupid high interest is a GOOD feeling.
I try to pay only with hard cash. You always know exactly how much money you carry around and how much you invest. Using a card, you don't really keep track of your money and it seems so easy.
Paying via PayPal or on Amazon is another thing... Just a couple of clicks and the money gets automatically subtracted from your bank account. So easy and comfortable... but you can get addicted to buying stuff real fast
(When I was a teen I always saved my money... then one time I got 1000€ from my grandparents, the most I ever had back then, an enormous present! Once I turned 18 and got me an ebay account, I started buying every game I long wanted. Then I got all the books that interested me on Amazon, yet I didn't lose too much money... so I got me a new TV and some PC hardware, etc. Although in the end I didn't spend everything, today it still irks me how stupid I was. So much money wasted on shit I haven't even used... spending that on living expenses would've been better -_-)
