Aku no Hana, Japan’s best ever (and only) rotoscoped TV anime, has exposed the original film used as a basis for its much loathed visual style.
The original photographic material used to create the shoddy rotoscoping the series is notorious for was recently aired as a “premium” extra on NicoNico:
Given the quality of their cast and production values, some have been given to ponder what possessed them not to simply make a TV drama in the first place…

They look better in real life, another reason to wonder why they wasted money on rotoscope.
Of course they look better. Back up on the other side of Uncanny Valley.
Most likely the point was to create shock value... And it's working, the everyday otaku are raging and creating noise about it but the people who look past the ugly rotoscoping are saying it's one of the best anime this year.
>people who look past the ugly rotoscoping
Just read manga.
I wish I could get past it, but half the battle is liking the characters. And its terribly hard to do so when some barely look human.
The sad thing is the more this is posted the more support and attention is generated for it, thus increasing its lifespan.
>half the battle is liking the characters.
what if i told you that the show is not trying to get you to like the characters
No ED song in manga.
To be honest the anime is quite near the actual reality. The MC is just average, his dorky friends look dorky, the popular one is good looking in a conservative way and the unpopular girl is ugly till average.
I would say it's a bit too much of a mirror for the average otaku to enjoy it.

True words.
Lets have the shitty moetards morons cry more! "YOur tears sustain me" phrase they love to say time and time again,
That's because they have actual shading which the rotoscoping is devoid of.
If the rotoscoping had shading I bet it would have looked alot better.
It feels weird watching with the backgrounds rendered normally but then you have these rotoscoped characters without any shadows/shading.
So true, besides the fact the anime versions of these characters look like trash (because really, they're not so much anime versions in the usual sense as vague interpretations with a side order of RANK), something the anime's 'defenders' fail to acknowledge is it's not even good rotoscoping.
Now if it had been, say, A Scanner Darkly level of rotoscoping, that would have been REALLY interesting and also shocking but in a potentially good way. Instead all I hear is people saying "Oh, their INTENTION was to shock people with ugliness"
Well, okay, great, but you know, I can think of MUSIC VIDEOS that have better rotoscoping than this, and that's just sad.
They should have used Aya Hirano as the base for the lead!
I don't care what people think, I still think Aya looks cute.
Sure, this ugly filty slut, you love,l go eahd, not one stopping you form liking a filty whore
1)How did Aya get involved in this thread?
2)Aya bashing is OVER!! She has a career, money and GOOD-LOOKING guys to have sex with. Bashing her because she WILL NEVER look at ANY OF YOU as a viable sex partner is just plain SAD!!! Now, stop secretly jerkin' off to Aya's pictures and go find a job, you lazy NEET's!!!
... I think it's trying to communicate.
As long as they release a live-action version after the anime I'll be happy.
You know there is something deeply wrong with an anime when the 3D version looks better than the 2D
2D pig-disgusting?
If Aku No Hana was a "Live Action" movie series rather than rotorscope anime, it will be a much better.
I agree, it would've been better if they just made it live action.
i would agree for tv series
but heck this show full of the lolz
and for the scrubs out there, there's nothing wrong moe you fagGots!
Says a moetard, you cannot be taken seriously
moetard, moetard.. just shut the fuck up already.
Just because he hate that fuckin ugly art, doesn't mean he a moetard.
How does prefering REAL LIFE actors make someone moetard? I could understand if they said they prefered the standard moeblob type anime, but that's not what they said. Rather than swearing and spouting incomprehensible nonsense, please justify your accusations. Maybe then we all won't think you're developmentally delayed (my appologies if you actually are).
Moetard is clearly a nickname for "homosapien".
@18:52 - maybe it was the avatar that made him call him a moetard?
(the STFU was at the GTFO. of course. Damn you, reply-system)
STFU idiot
GTFO moetard
Trolling people by using "anonymous" account ? get a life dude :)
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FUKIN GOOD ENOUGH
They should have released a live action instead than the horrendous anime
They would have saved a lot of money.
"Given the quality of their cast and production values, some have been given to ponder what possessed them not to simply make a TV drama in the first place.."
They should have, the rotoscope is not even decent quality.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought about this
Whar not decent quality is the scrwed up mind and perspective of moetards, they should nd must disappear.
Well, That was barely English but...
As for the crappy rotoscoping: how about the scenes where faces are missing entirely and lips don't look like lips because they just made them into black wavy lines. Mouth movement is off, which is ironic since they traced a picture.
I have no issue with the girls not looking like they are all anorexic to make it work, I like the normal proportions, but the faces, when they bother to draw them, are a mess.
Not to mention the fact that most of the time they're also missing their noses too.
Open your eyes, a lot of anime these days don't draw noses. For example look at K-ON.
Since you appear from you comments to be about twelve years old or so, can you please tell us about how many times a week your father rapes you? And how many animals do you vivisect a week?
You see, being (as you clearly are) unable to appreciate the beauty of something like the average moe character -- characters specifically designed to fall into the very definition of beautiful -- means that you are quite likely the kind of person who can not understand the purpose of an art museum because to you the paintings are merely squares of canvas with blobs of paint on them.
In short, you are highly psychologically damaged. You appear destined to becoming a serial killer, or an average corporate CEO. Please seek professional help as soon as possible. If none is available to you where you are, then please just go play in traffic.
classy
you surely told that troller after he completely trolled you

aGAIN, JUST SHUT UP.
Everyone just shut up!!
What was that.....?
THE WIND!!!!!!!
trolls!
gets' em every time
No, you shup up!
I'm confused, it's obvious that the character designs were compromised due to the rotoscoping. Why would you do this when you have solid, existing designs already? It seems like a shoddy, cost-reducing technique yet this probably ended up costing just as much, if not more.
One word: trolling.
Yes, the director was actually trolling the viewers, and the production committee. He even admitted that in an interview. Reason: he wanted to do live-action, but the producers wouldn't let him. So he took revenge on them and the evil 2D-otaku. The completely twisted mangaka was delighted by the idea and gave his ok.
Couldn't they fire him? It's not like Directors are hard to find in Japan, what makes this guy special anyway?
[citation needed]
Sorry, I can't find the interview again. Someone posted a link on IRC and I google-translated it to verify that it roughly lines up with what he claimed it said. Unfortunately, my lack of moonspeak skills make it very hard to track down again. If memory serves right it was originally published in a print magazine though.
You're of course free to not believe this. But it's the truth.
