Square Enix’s reputation as the EA of the East continues to harden amongst Final Fantasy fans – their latest announcement of a “new Final Fantasy Tactics title” turns out to be a social game for mobile phones…

Fortunately, this being Square Enix it seems expectations never rose high enough to be dashed, although the extreme unpopularity of both Square Enix and Mobage combined is proving especially provocative to Tactics fans.

After being widely reviled for having the audacity to port a social game to the PSV, and having a business plan for rescuing their catastrophically mismanaged company which consists of firing their CEO and replacing him with his right hand man for the past decade, apparently so he can churn out more outstanding social games and remakes, the prospect of things getting worse still before their eventual bankruptcy finally liberates all their IP is an upsetting one to many.

To be a fly on the wall of these board meetings...

"So... profits are down. As is our popularity... What should we do?"
    ...
"Social game! Those are popular now!"
"They are! But they can't go everywhere... what do people use the most these days and carry around a lot?"
    ...
"Phones! We'll make it a social game... ON THE PHONE!"
And they all cried out in joy as they slit the lambs throat on the board room table. Then rejoiced in a blood orgy. To the FF God of Retardation.

    Because this is fucking retarded.

am i the only one who actually thinks this could be good? I mean ok its not the titles we want but phone games are popular and if its made well this can be a hit. Before you guys flame let me ask: How many games do you play on your phone?
WOuld you really hate a fun to play final fantasy for your phone if you can play it casualy?

Game like final fantasy have a deeper story than casual game like Angry Bird, which made it impossible to enjoy to play the game when you are queuing in supermarket, or while waiting in restaurant for your food to be delivered.

Imagine the you are watching cutscene where Aerith about to get stabbed by Sephiroth, then the waitress come and say "here's your order, sir". You look back at the screen, and Aerith already dead.. Totally breaking the moment.

One more thing, playing an RPG on phone sucks because of no physical button. Especially the phone with small screen, it is even harder to correctly press the virtual d-pad and button. You can easily press the wrong button and your finger slip away from the button.

So I am thinking Final Fantasy/ Fantasy Tactic on phone is not a good idea.

Who says the game need cutscreen? Why simple don't make a game like the old times. Final Fantasy: Dimensions, its good damn its really, really good. Take me back at the time who I spend ours playing Final Fantasy II(IV) and III(VI) with a English-Portuguese dictionary. And the if they make a game with auto-pause, its not really a good excuse. Because, its issue with Handheld right? Sooooo... why make games for Handheld?

First they release "All the Bravest", and fans cry out that it's a blatant money-grab and that they want a real game.
So what SE hears from that is, "we should doubledown and create a cowclicker!".

I'm pretty sure SquareEnix already knows the company's more than fucked at this point.

You lose so much profit, what's the point in trying to regain it back? It'd take too much time and effort to get even half of that amount.

Might as well have fun dicking around with the remaining funds before it goes kaput.

Well when your company is in the red and you run the real risk of bankruptcy, its probably better to spread the risk out and invest in multiple, cheap projects that have a higher likelihood to succeed (and alternatively won't be as detrimental if they fail) instead of throwing all your eggs into 1 basket and trying to design an epic, time consuming and expensive game and hope that it works out.

Of course they are going to take the safer approach for the short term at least. Designing a phone game requires way, way less resources and has a much larger potential marketplace. Their risk is low and their chances of success is much higher. The real question comes down the line if they do recover; will they stick with what saved them or will they move back into heavy console production.

Psh. If they find something successful with the cheap tactic, then they're gonna stick with that for quiiiiiiiiiiite awhile. Companies always like to get the most money out of the least expenses >.>

All this makes sense. I don't think SE has the funds to really take a major risk at the moment.

But honestly: if they're going to make mobile games, it'd probably be better to start with a fresh IP. That seems like a risk, but bear with me: at this point, the FinalFantasy name does basically nothing for mobile stuff since the fans have already decided it'd be crap. What it does do is drag the FF brandname as a whole through the mud even more.

Seeing as to how it's one of the only major IPs SE has left, all they're doing is actively screwing themselves over for a future recovery, when they DO have the funds to make an A-list game.

So, why can't they try and repeat the history of Squaresoft? Way back in the '80s? They were about to go bankrupt, they put all their eggs into 1 basket, and make a game called "Final Fantasy".

Oh wait, they're not Squaresoft no more...

    23:47 27/04/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

Because they ripped off Enix's Dragon Quest to make Final Fantasy and unlike then, the company is made of hundreds of employees. When you'd got such a large staff to pay you can't take risks like an upstart could.

Anyway, Square did try to repeat history and it ended badly, remember Spirits Within? That was a huge gamble that ended very badly and damn near killed the company.

Also the only people that mattered quit years ago, to start their own came companies.

Spirits Within failed because again they tried to make it WESTERNIZED. It wasn't even FF it just carried the name. Had nothing to do with the video-games at all.

Japanese need to stop this shit in gaming as well as Koreans.

If they made a FF7 remake? All eggs in the one basket most likely to float in a flood?

Easier said than done. IF they remake, they have to change system since the system of turn base fights is now boring as hell torturing angels. FFCC was good since it offered the lone soldier zack but in FF7, they have to think of either a better AI for the team or a sharper learning curve. The latter will cater to hardcore gamers but... we didn't realise it's the age of casual gamers. And casual gamers spend more than hardcore gamers since they rarely give a fuck about story, system or visuals. They just want something to burn time while on the go or at work.

Also, every major company goes through a "fucked up" stage, Walt Disney's lasted for like 20 years after Walt Disney died and before Eisner took over, and now they're the kings of entertainment all around the world. This happens, it doesn't mean they should just be like you and: "aaaah, screw it, I'm outta here"

It's almost as if they're deliberately trying to go for the Springtime For Hitler route.

If they are, someone should tell them that it doesn't work like that; it works by actively trying to make something China-quality but making something excellent by mistake (like trying to make a game worse than Superman N64, failing at that, and inadvertently making a game better than GoldenEye N64 as a result of failing at failing)

It's part of an elaborate scheme to get the company's stock as low as possible, buy it all out, and then announce they're remaking final fantasy VII. Then they sell all the stock and don't actually make FFVII.

i can understand the point that doing smaller, cheaper projects in a higher rate is probably better than investing in a big project (specialy if the only thing it have is graphics, like ff13). But if they don't create good plot and/or are recycling sprites (like the last ff for mobile phones), it will probably be looked as SHIT.
Well, not that i care much about the present square enix. The last time i cared about their releases was probably with the remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together...
