Well makes sence, Just look at K-ON!, sweet FA happens plot wise in it but still insanley popular, why? coz of great characters.
That's not what character design is though. It's what they look like - which is generic, normal, KyoAni-style girls.
well, if look at things clearly, k-on was the one that set the "standard" on KyoAni's character designs everything before k-on looked quite different.

I like his stuff as well. It's very simple but it has a charm to it some of the other designers can't always manage to achieve.

* Shunya Yamashita - very delicious, very round feminine designs, old school but still relevant
* Yusuke Kozaki - at face value looks generic, but you look at the posture and overall theme and the characters are always ready to pounce
* Sano Toshihide - the best MILF designer that ever graced this world
ummm.... the girls from clamp? designers of geass, xxxholic, tsubasa chronicles and chobit characters....
I don't know if a group that uses the same characters in every story should be regarded as great character designers.
