The 2nd episode of hugely controversial brutal rotoscope anime Aku no Hana has given rise to a disturbing realisation amongst viewers – that it may actually be good in spite of the heretical character designs…

The anime is apparently so loathed people (or 2ch at any rate) are starting to like it:

“I got used to it. Those girls are cute, it’s just the caps which are creepy.”

“Is the reason I found this good because of the sheer power of the original?”

“Once you get used to it, it is really good. Even the people in the screenshot threads rate it.”

“This one was too good, really exciting!”

“So it dodged the bullet by becoming a joke anime so bad it is good…”

“After watching the first episode a number of times I am inured to it and can now watch normally.”

“Humans can get used to anything, even this. I don’t even notice the design now. In fact I am really looking forward to it.”

“Everyone bashed the hell out of the first episode, but once you are used to the production style it is seriously good. That poor protagonist!”

“Creepy art, but when you use creepy art to depict creepy things, it is rather effective.”

“My eyes… they became used to this.”

“The director was saying in an interview that it was all intended to create a special atmosphere.”

“I can’t believe it, this is good. You guys bashed it so much I actually started watching it, and now it is obviously the best anime of the season!”

What's the deal with this? I like the art style, anime's pretty much degenerated into nothing but moe, fanservice bullshit and when something that's fresh and new and could set a new example for the industry comes out it gets a ton of flak for not being a moe blob of identical looking characters with different hairstyles?

I hope for all our sake that you get voted to oblivion where you belong.

Then again, this is obviously a trollish remark and you can't begin to understand the phenom where people start allowing bad quality and standards like this.

If this set a new standard for the industry in terms of art style, I, along with hundreds of thousands of others, would immediately leave this industry for good and never look back. This is beyond the monotonous shit of moeblob and school drama, this kind of art style is horrendously bad and you're trying to let them get away with it.

Thank you for being a retard who did not understand a single word of what people are complaining about.

Also, rotoscoping is hardly "fresh", but trying to pass of a piss poor job of it as "art" certainly is.

I understand why people are complaining about it, the art is different from the manga, it falls in the uncanny valley, it's rotoscoped so it's lazy, animation is wonky, characters look weird, etc.

But that's just it, I don't care, I liked it for being the first anime in ages to try something different. I was absolutely tired of all that cutesy anime bs seeping into absolutely every single goddamn anime and finally here's something that sets itself apart from the stagnant pool of modern anime. I, for one, welcome change, even if it comes in small, odd looking steps.

there are plenty of anime that already set themselves apart for the stagnant pool your talking with art style (tatami galaxy and sayonara zetsubo sensei) and did it without doing a lazy piss poor job on like this anime did. im sorry that your craving of anything different caused you to settle with such a horrendously done animation.

but it fine for you right? it doesn't matter if your sense of actual quality is good as long as you can be different from a majority and think you're such a rebel.

"different denotes neither bad nor good, but it certainly means 'not the same'."

People wouldn't be complaining (or at least not as much, there will always be haters) if this anime was "different good"

In other news, the poor quality and continental drift-like story pacing made me read the manga. Mission accomplished I suppose

Were you around when people bitched endlessly about how Tatami Galaxy wasn't good because it wasn't like all the moe shows? People were saying the same kinds of things about it they're saying about Aku no Hana.

And don't even get me started on Zetsubou sensei. It was just as divisive, except that it was a Shaft anime at a time when people had written Shaft off almost entirely.

@23:32: nonsense. People were complaining about Tatami's various differences almost (if not just) as much. Wah! It looks different! Wah! He talks too fast! Wah! And don't even get me started on the reactions to basically every Shaft anime back in the day before Bakemonogatari.

Who's trying to pass this off as "art"? Everyone's too busy ramming their heads up their asses complaining that it isn't up to their undefined standards of beauty.

Just take the very last comparison between a good approach to the material and the actual work. Not a single sane person would vote for the fuckfaces we got with this shitty hack-work.

@19:20: I'm sorry but based on your "good approach" looks like the bog-standard shit we've seen a million times over, I and many others would've never even given it a second look. And why the hell would we?

The creators simply decided they didn't want their hard work to just become another droplet in the giant fucking grey blob of generic school anime. And it's about time more people did the same.

people who hate the art style of this anime dont want a kawaii moe anime like some of you koolaid drinking motherfuckers think. All we wanted was for the anime to be the same art style as the manga which wasnt moe and despite your ignorance actually fit within the tone of the story being told.

agreed. needs more shades. i am more of a fan of multifaced shades .... but these usually arent used in animes.
animes usually take vector based shadows... why not this anime? its .... like.... a standard.

    Comment by Anonymous

Jeez, just listen to yourself. You basically said "we want it to be exactly the same as the manga, which is a typical moe kawaii style", and then in the same breath claimed that's not what you wanted.

Can't you just be happy with the manga as a work in and of itself, and treat the anime as its own thing? Is it really that offensive to you? Did Aku no Hana save your life?

I think you require better Comprehension skills... Don't just assume that everyone who's into anime wants a Moe-Moe-KYUN!~ Anime like K-On or gigantic boobed women like in Queen's Blade.

    Here's an example:
Your told that your buddies are going out to bring back Burgers for take out. Normally you'd expect something good right? Then you find it out it's just McDonalds.

I've only watched the first episode, but it was seriously dull. It wasn't the rotoscoping which bothered me as much as the pacing. Or lack thereof. The entire episode is filled with long periods where literally nothing happens. You just watch people walk to and from school. Dialogue is minimalistic and any hint of a plot is swept aside to fit in more awkward silences.

Maybe it really picks up in the second episode, but I can't say I'm all that excited to see it through the season.

The caps looks creepy because is out of context. When you see it inserted in the animation looks really good, like Bakshi´s work in American Pop or LOTR. I really liked both episodes and art wasnt a problem to me, pretty much because I read the whole manga and the first 5 volumes had a really poor art.

It's not worth it. Let them enjoy their samey-looking anime with bland, samey stories. Let them cry that they can't look past an intentionally ugly style to the good stuff within. Let them pretend they're too good for this. They do it every season.

And because the manga had "bad" art, in your mind, so does the anime to have that too? Seriously, that's like saying that the SFX on hollywood movies needed to be as bad as the plots are, which is horrible.

    12:38 14/04/2013 # ! Neutral (0)

No, I'm pretty sure they're saying that insisting that the art in the anime is terrible because the manga's art is "better" is so vague and subjective it's laughable to pretend one is distinctly better than the other.

Can I say that, despite the powerful atmosphere the first episode set up, it covered so little actual content compared to the second episode that I'd point to that as being another major factor as why so many people hated it from the first episode...

I think this might actually be good for the anime industry as a whole... This way the viewers will learn that there is more to anime than just cute girls.

I can't say I like the style though, but I do think it might be a good lesson for those who watch anything with cute girls and pantyshots...

So be proud! Soon we will no longer have to worry about things like story, characterization, or originality!
