Million Arthur: “A New Low Even For Square Enix”

million-arthur-003

The latest controversy courted by Square Enix comes in the form of their decision to release “Million Arthur” on the PlayStation Vita – the first time the company has been shameless enough as to release a F2P smartphone card game on a real gaming device.

Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur, an anime-styled “online card battle RPG” which embraces the F2P pay-per-item style business model popular with smartphone casuals but widely loathed by actual gamers, is due later in April:

The game does feature some nice art on the cards:

The decision to release “smartphone trash” onto the PSV has caused a surprising amount of umbrage online – although there is evidently some disagreement as to whether this is a sign of the Vita or Square Enix’s dire straits:

“Square Enix’s stock price is down to 3 digits!”

“A F2P pay-per-item game? So a social game?”

“Square Enix has totally betrayed us.”

“I wish they’d just hurry up and go bankrupt. Nobody would lose out.”

“They are seriously off course now.”

“Who would even buy one of their games now?”

“This trash? The legendary one with all the buggy events which they never patched and which you still have to pay for…”

“I guess this befits the Vita…”

“Just knowing Square Enix was involved makes me lose interest.”

“Wonderful, social games on the Vita…”

“Why not leave this stuff on the smartphones where it belongs?”

“Where is FF11?”

“I’d rather they not release this item charging stuff on consumer gaming devices.”

“Let this trash die on the smartphones.”

“No phone games on consoles please!”

“Who is going to play a game like this on the Vita anyway?”

“Porting one of these fraudulent charge games onto the Vita, really? Nobody wants them.”

“Only middle schoolers buy or play card games. And they hardly own Vitas, so this is doubly bad.”

“Square Enix are done for. They have no choice but to concentrate everything on the only stuff they have which makes any money now.”

“They have failed at all their online games… I think this is just Wada’s legacy being passed down.”

“A game publisher which doesn’t sell releases a game which didn’t sell on hardware which didn’t sell, classic.”

“Whether it sells or not, I hope they introduce some sort of zoning feature so kids are protected from being bilked by their charging.”

“This series bombed years ago on phones. Do they really think a smartphone app on the Vita has any chance?”

“If this doesn’t bomb, expect a flood of F2P smartphone games on handhelds.”

“Square Enix, are you alright?”

“Porting a social game onto the Vita… a new low.”

You could go play Sword Girls. Seems like a similar concept.

And since SE had nothing to do with it, SG is probably a lot better. Definitely got better artwork, at least.

Nope.. The Bravely Default localization rumor make me on verge of praising SE, while this card game make me hate them..

I got a good reason. I don't have a copy of KH3 on my hand right now and I expected that 5 years ago.

You don't have to play it if you don't want but some of like "trash" like this and having more games available is always a good thing.

When will they make a good game like they used to.

A few days after Never. They're just not the same people anymore, therefore their ideas and standards have changed. And not for the better, of course.

Square-Penix had a decent run, though I liked them ever so much more when it was just Squaresoft. Enix has always been deadweight, and now they both get to go down for it.

Just shut it down, SE. At least back out with some fucking dignity intact.

Have to say something to defend Enix. Go play all the RPG's by Enix back in the 90's (Terranigma, Soul Blazer, Star Ocean, etc.). They are all as good as if not better than the contemporary final fantasies.

And here is some fun trivia... The Dragon Quest series was not a Square series... The Orge Battle / Tactic Orge / Final Fantasy Tactics series was also not a Square series... Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, etc. There were all Enix's franchises.

Other than Final Fantasy, the majority of good games released by Square Enix actually came from the Enix half.

Way to completely ignore the Chrono series, the Seiken Densetsu series, Super Mario RPG, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics and lots of other games in your Enix fanboyism.

Enix wasn't a crap company before, sure, but it was definitely Enix's management after the merger who caused the problems SE has had since.

Oh really... Enix is responsible for shitty games like Terranigma, Soul Blazer, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, Chrono series, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia and Final Fantasy Tactics?

Wow... so Enix really is the problem, I wouldn't have believed it until you guys pointed it out for me.

... anyway some of those card are ... alluring to say the least .
not fan of card game tho ... i'll get it if it's free to play ... but i don't think i'll ever put any cash in it .

honestly if SE is going to bring card stuff to vita ... hurry up and bring lord of vermillion to ps3/vita ...

    Comment by Anonymous

If you don't like it then don't buy it...Oh wait...it is free. Are we angry that this game will probably not likely leave Japan? Or are we back to finding more reasons to hate SE? I don't really care much for SE with their decisions but it feels like everyone loves to hate on them. It is like getting angry at the retarded kid for eating glue. The more he gets attention, the more he will mistake it for us liking him eating glue.

It's not free to play, it's freemium. And 99% of the time the "free" starts losing out to the other part very quickly. Freemium is just a fucking terrible system, but one widely loved by people who aren't actually gamers... Or don't understand that they aren't.

And yes, we gamers get angry when we see a company that we used to respect just producing more and more trash, or pure cash outs. Which this is. Every freemium game in existence either is or becomes a cash out. Especially when so many fucking cards are obvious fan service. It's just pathetic.

So as a gamer, I'm supposed to be angry every time a company does something I don't want to them to do? Be a bigger share holder and make them make games you want then.

Rather than having Square Enix using their resource to make/port a game that was "bombed" on smartphone(according to 2Chan), a game that probably no one care(there are no card game sold like hot cake anywhere, Japan,US or EU), I prefer they put their money and man power into bringing the too long in development, 6 years old still not out Versus 13 and localizing Type0 and Bravely Default..

the game is actually pretty popular. However square released an update that makes it unfair for free players and thus received many complains. They are going to release another update to fix. this so it should be fine by then.

I swear, only the Enix side in the squaresoft-enix joining actually makes decent games anymore. I'd take a star ocean over a final fantasy anyday because its just a better game, or rather i'd take anything the enix side makes over squaresoft.I was a square fan till ps2 hit, then been going down the shitty since ps2 era, while enix has still been making good games, lets be honest, if enix left squaresoft, would square survive? I am guessing probally not due to how they have been going lately. Its a real fucking shame that if square goes down, Enix will probally be dragged down with them.

Also.. The art on some of those cards is hot :P

i would have thought printing out and releasing it as an actual card game would be better? Maybe have some rare cards only available as tie ins with other games or from recieving achievements in their own games? maybe some common but unique cards in gaming magazines etc etc...

They didnt think of that did they?

    Comment by Anonymous
    06:43 05/04/2013 # ! Neutral (+0.2)

All they have to do is make some ultra-rare cards with "clear"(ie. uncensored) visuals on cards like pic 009 and it starts printing money...

Just use external funding for games, Like Wasteland 2, Torment : Tides Of Numerea, Project Eternity... Make the games people want to play, making sure they will pay for it beforehand.

No, the moe-looking cards shown here are only a minority... I bet there are hundreds of cards and they probably showed all or almost all of those cards on this article.

I would normally call it a low blow, but, seeing how Moe itself is pretty much a part of Japan's culture today, I guess it is only natural from an oriental point of view.

...but the game itself is a low blow, so disregard all that.
