Toriyama: “Hollywood’s Dragon Ball Sucked”

With unusual candour for a top mangaka, on the eve of the release of the first animated Dragon Ball movie in over a decade series creator Akira Toriyama has taken some time out to bash the notoriously bad Hollywood adaptation he authorised.
A recent interview with Akira Toriyama about the new (2D) Dragon Ball Z movie, which for the first time he is helping to script, includes the admission that he was less than pleased with the Hollywood version:
With the Hollywood live action version, the script didn’t contain much evidence of the distinctive Dragon Ball world, and wasn’t even that interesting, and despite me warning them and suggesting changes they were so sure of themselves that they ignored me.
What they came out with in the end was a movie I can’t really call on par with the usual Dragon Ball.
Prior to the movie’s release he esteemed “the super talent of the production staff and actors” and enthused that “thanks to their power this may become a major masterpiece!”, and since its release has generally kept quiet about it.

A well made Dragon Ball movie nowadays would be really awesome.
Why does he have to tell this now? Why not when its still a complete subject of ridicule when it first came out?
Because it sucked so much that it doesn't deserve Toriyama's immediate attention to say that it sucks.

But it's basically the same he said around 20 year ago about the original Dragon Ball anime... Does that mean for Toriyama both are abouth the same quality?
Last 20 year, he said the anime sucked because some part (like Goku's revival after Cell saga)was inadvertently pushed by editorial/reader's call for Goku to remain as the main hero. Evolution on the other, just sucked from the get-go; cast to story to production. Most likely for Toriyama, Dragon Ball's awesome as long as it follows his way of telling the story.
He didn't endorse the movie.
I'd rather hear what he thinks about DBGT.
Maybe Toriyama should reboot Dragon Ball the same way DC reboots its comics

Rebooting the universe is but a lame business decision to get back from their low sales. The US comic industry is in a pinch so both DC and Marvel had to take drastic measures to lure back their customers and attract new ones.
There is some sort of reboot manga out called Dragonball SD. Toriyama doesn't draw it. It looked kind of dumb, so I didn't pick it up.
To say something that will get people's attention and get free publicity for the new movie. Any publicity is good publicity.

Yeah, the point is more that he didn't say shit about it before it came out, and did the "wait and see" approach so he could have the best of both worlds if it was bad or good..
More like he didn't want to hurt the sales so he would get his share.

It's just some egotistical and ignorant directors/producers with too much power in their hands, like Uwe Boll, they're the problem.
Most of the Hollywood movies suck.
If most of them sucked Hollywood would have gone under years ago.
You need to learn about the Pareto ratio, and Sturgeon's law.
You only need a handful of good movies to cover for all the failures.
The better the one movie, the more you can squeeze out of it. The first release, the BD, the DVD, sell it to TV networks later. Sell it to Netflix.
And if you're George Lucas, release a new and totally official remade version, again.
Furthermore, thanks to Hollywood accounting, you can underplay how much you made, so you don't have to pay as much royalties.
And there's always the option to blame piracy.

Forget it, generalizing hollywood by sticking all english-speaking films under one umbrella then only looking at the bad ones is what most people have loved to do since the end of the last century. "That's hollywood for ya! for shame!"
The funny thing is they wont go under since the people paying are too dumb to realize how bad those movies are..
Uwe Boll is actually really good at directing, listen to some of his interviews, he gets the shit end of the stick for almost everything. i suggest the radiodrome interview where he really goes into it.

He is good at movie making, he's just doing crap movies because the tax scheme in Germany allows producers to claim some relief from government for under performing films. Add in Hollywood accounting as seen in Yamazaki Mari's Thermae Romae article about being underpaid and that means he can get quite a bit of breaks.
He can make honest living as a good filmmaker or he can make good living as a dishonest filmmaker.

i liked how the first batman movie was going but when the director stated that he hated "supernatural" villians he lost me, thats what made batman theman. He was normal doing abnormal things. To me first was good, second was ok third you lost me....

Not that the batman movies were some kind of masterpeace, but given enough time, anyone can accidentally come up with a good artwork. This still doesn't excuse the fact that the majority of Hollywood movies are cash cow rehashes with no substance above the typical Internet fanfic.

Also a lot of bad movies come out of hollywood, but that is simple due to the sheer number of movies made there. You would need to be willfully blind to not notice all the successes both from an artistic and entertainment value that came from there. Most movies made in any part of the world suck.
Yeah, give Akira Toriyama a break. I think everyone is entitled to at least one major screw-up in their professional career. What started off as hopeful optimism ended in a bitter and miserable failure. I never watched Evolution, myself, but even from the previews I could tell that Toriyama did not have much of a say in the creative process that led to the final result.
