A teacher who hit one of his pupils 53 times in the face for eating sweets on a school trip, injuring his neck and requiring weeks of recovery, has had his pay reduced 10% for 6 months.
The 42-year-old unidentified Kagoshima city middle school teacher was overseeing a school trip when he spotted a 3rd year pupil eating sweets on the bus.
He took him to the staffroom and hit him 3 times in the face, and then had him accompany him to a more secluded spot, where he slapped him a further 50 times.
The boy suffered injuries to his cervical vertebrae as a result of the beating, and required several weeks to recover.
The teacher reported his attack to the principal, but told him he had only hit the boy 10 times and that he had only cut his mouth. The principal issued him a “written reprimand.”
After doctors told the boy’s parents he would need weeks to recover, they confronted the school with the report, forcing them to reinvestigate.
As a result of this the principal himself was issued a written reprimand by the local school board, and the teacher was given a temporary 10% pay cut lasting 6 months.
In light of recent similar incidents, the apparent legal invulnerability of Japan’s teaching profession is again coming under scrutiny online:

How can they have a better education system when they allow people like this to be teachers, and keep living after they do something like this?
It's called cooking the books.
The educational system is not really that much better when a child does poorly in what is the equivalent of jr high they get shipped off to a vocational school.
An interesting note late bloomers like Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman would have gotten swept under the rug in such a system.
It is because their teachers can do things like this that the children pay attention in school.

There are reasons for that.
Japan's educational system is all about test prep and nothing else. In class, theory, after school, cram school for test prep. The system pumps out young ppl whose only skill is in test taking.
The mandatory financing, communication, networking, resume and interview etiquette classes that are all the rage in China, aren't even available as electives in Japan.
East Asian education systems are all brutal, but Japan's is in all the wrong ways.
Well, young generation unemployment rate is much higher in Europe and USA, which means they have more NEET than Japan....

I think it's part of how their educational system is ran and how teachers are held in a very high regard.
This often causes people to look the other way when they get someone unfit to be a teacher let alone even be allowed near children unsupervised vs risk tarnishing the image of their educational system.
This is like when you have too much power in anime and become too arrogant.

Actually I once met an university Teacher in Japan that was a foreign. He said that Gaijins have it even better than the Japanese ones. Like larger vacations and not having to do shitty protocol staying late and stuff like that.

I dunno. Maybe we're thinking about this all wrong. Even with teachers like this Japan churns out students which are better educated, law-abiding, and at worst only end up killing themselves rather than blowing away dozens of innocent people in a school massacre. If you look at it as the ends justifying the means, it's a net win no matter how you slice it.

Agreed. While I don't usually condone violence against other people, this is a case where the adult is clearly in the wrong and since the punishment by the authorities wasn't anywhere near harsh enough, the parents of the youth have to step in and get some justice.
