An official Capcom ranking of the most beloved Street Fighters has been attracting attention – mainly for the yawning and rather embarrassing (though to whom is perhaps open to question) gulf between the preferences of Japanese and Americans, with obscure schoolgirls easily ousting the likes of Ryuken…
America and Europe select a muscular selection of bruisers:

Looks like basicly the same list with minor difrences. Ryu and Sakura and Juri are on the same spots.
Also Id hardly call the american list the "Beefy Musscular" list...
Minor characters that aren't even series regulars taking top spots doesn't exactly seem like 'small differences'. I suspect this was the result of vote manipulation, either by someone wanting their unpopular characters to take the top spots, or someone just wanting to troll the list. :P
Not being a SF fan I can't exactly tell but I remember all characters being built with balance in mind so in theory Ryu and Karin have the same gameplay potential.
However newer characters tend to have weird move sets driven by the need to make the character "different". These unconventional move sets then may allow for game breaking tactics or just superior game.
What I mean is, I wouldn't just count out the probability that Karin may actually be a the best characater, moe apart.
Moe-wise? Sakura is a million times better.
Actually, I agree with this comment. It's relevant to almost any game out there that use real-time fighting gameplay, not just fighting game. And even MMO.
New Classes/Characters tend to have the potential to outplay or even outperform basic classes with even less effort. Be it better properties or easier to perform all the skills or movelist. Despite what the developer trying to do, with balance in mind, hardcore players always finds a way to abuse the hell out of them. While basic characters/classes are constrained by their default potential as they were the first being made so they has more things reduced out of them. Primarily because when a new game in production stage, all those basics are tested on any given scenarios and made to had something to compensate over another to counter such occasion. While the new class/characters, despite also being tested, were mostly never as deep as the basic since they usually made in such a rushed time.
Even with nerf by each update never really helps. Since the developers always thought, it would not be wise to nerf just the new overpowered classes/characters, they also nerf the basic class/character at the same time.
And after realizing this, I say there are no such things as balanced game.
Thus, which is why I stick to play the good ol' Guilty Gear series. Every each characters has potential of unbalanced properties. Every single one of them are capable to outplay other character when they got trap on their momentum. After the intros are get, there are no escape. Unless you have BURST. Win or lose only depends on your move decisions on how to get to that intro. Whoever got that most, are the winner.
Ingrid wasn't even created for Street Fighter. They just put her in that one version of Alpha 3 for the hell of it.
Yeah, characters mostly repeat with a few exceptions and some spots swapped.
But it's still interestin to see those small differences.
I think this got lost in translation.
When you ask an American who is their favorite, we usually mean "who do you like playing the most?"
No Westerner is even considering the translation, "Who do you like masturbating to the most?" which seems to be primary the Japanese interpretation.
Then I'd be worried about why Ryu is 2nd on their list, lol.

yeah, Morrigan's enough*... which is to say, I've barely jacked off to ANY Street Fighter characters. They just don't really do it for me, personally (must be all the short-hair and/or head accessories; not especially my cup of tea). There were some exceptions with Chun Li and maybe Karin, but only because I fondly recognized the artists involved.

I'd like to think that the Japanese voters just had more respect for the female characters in general. It's extremely misogynistic to think that if a female gets more votes it's only because of her appearance and nothing to do with character or anything else.
