They managed to take a giant robot show and make it both plodding and dull. Full of naval gazing, lacking action.

It's interesting that while people complain about (popular) anime today being more cute or more eroticized, I found that many old manga and anime that found some popularity showed a lot of innocent women and children being torn up in various ways. If that's what anime needs more of today to be taken more seriously then I don't want it.
