Patlabor Returns – “But Why As Live Action…”

Classic mech-police drama Patlabor is finally to return in 2014 – but as a live action project, a decision which seems to have rankled those hoping for more of the anime.
Production is by Omnibus Japan, the CG and post-production company credited on such classics as Evangelion 2.0 and Oppai Ballet, and Tohokushinsha, their parent company and the producers of the original Patlabor anime, as well as Saikano and the original Appleseed OVA.
The decision to use live action (although given the content of the show “CG action with live actors” looks likely to be a more appropriate description) rather than anime already looks to have won the show few takers amongst fans, with “Patraper” quips accompanying complaints about both the quality of Japanese mecha-CG and the universally underwhelming nature of anime-live action adaptations.

Well, Japan can make some epic bad live-action movies, but if they're not directed by Oshii, at least there may be some humor in them?

the only live actions i remember to like was gto and kerberus saga stuff. But gto manga was much better

Casshern, Battle Royale 2, Ring 2, Eko Eko Azarak, Kouga Ninpouchou Basilisk - The Live-Action ("Shinobi: Heart Under Blade"), really a huge portion of Japanese movies I have seen that were not directed by Kinji Fukasaku or Akira Kurosawa, did not feature Takeshi Kitano, or were not comedies.
Some? More like makes A LOT of bad live-action films. And don't use 'epic', that shit is so played out.
see. this is why i like anime over japanese live action. as a matter of fact. most japanese movies are just bad. except the horror movies

7 Samurai, Yojimbo, In the Realm of the Senses, Sansho the Bailiff, etc...
There are plenty of AAA Japanese films.
Live action remakes, however, are always diarrhea incarnate.
The Kenshin Live action adaptation was incredibly awesome as was the Yamato movie.
I was a little disappointed by the Yamato movie they veered too far from the story line.
Agreed it seems live action remakes are rarely any good no matter who does them.
japanese movies isn't bad, they have good storylines and good directions. the 'bad' parts are the 99% of actors and actresses.
Wooden acting can be a problem.
Special effects & stage design are ass too. Just look at either live-action adaption of Grave of Fireflies. Worst post bombing scenery ever.
Departure is a very good Japanese movie.
It rather a serious toned movie, but packed with many interesting side of Japanese culture. It won 2009 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and 13 other awards.

Let's hope Pacific Rim doesn't suck other wise Guillermo del Toro won't be directing this movie.
The Pacific Rim trailer already indicates great amounts of suckage, and I don't know how to interpret your mentino of completely and entirely unrelated-to-Patlabor Guillermo del Toro.

Indeed. So long as those assholes at Hollywood keep their grubby mits off of them, live-action adaptations of Japanese properties tend to be watchable at the very least. Hell, a cheap Chinese knock-off seems like it would be better.
Might work, Patlabor is as much about the drama as it is about the mecha.

GTO did an awesome job...
GTO did not require a special effects budget, bad comparison.
I don't mind as long as the stories as good as the 2nd movie.
It will be interesting to see how Pacific Rim fares first. The designs are nothing at all alike, but if it's successful, it'll at least show that a live action giant mecha movie is feasible.
If they can produce a movie that doesn't require people to watch with a large amount of suspension of belief, it would be incredible. And no cheating where the mechs are hardly featured at all like the second movie.
After that, who knows, live action Macross or dare I say Evangelion? Just so long as they don't completely ruin the license...

Urrrrg, as a long long time fan of Patlabor, I don't like this new development one bit...
nothing personal.. but casherns fighting animation looked kinda gay to me. maybe i just prefer a more fast paced (less pictures, frames, time per move) fighting style. or maybe it was his skinny tight suit which made him look that way.....
All these studios should like collaborate and finally make a Gundam live action movie >.>
i would love to see Natsuna Watanabe playing the lead role or maybe Yumiko Shaku (also piloted a Mechagodzilla in a Godzilla movie)
