China & Korea Refuse To Attend 3/11 Memorial

3-11-memorial_0.jpg

China and South Korea are facing intense criticism in Japan after both nations refused to attend the official 2nd anniversary memorial service for the 3/11 tragedy, with China even going a step further and criticising Japan for allowing Taiwan to present a wreath at the ceremony.

The Japanese government’s 2nd anniversary memorial service for the tragedy of 3/11 saw victims of the disaster joined by the prime minister and emperor.

However, amongst the over 150 other nations joining the service, two were conspicuously absent – China and South Korea both refused to send representatives.

Japan’s foreign ministry merely comments that “it was the Chinese side’s decision.” China has not given any reason for its decision, and nor has Korea.

The previous year’s service saw Taiwan excluded from the nations providing wreaths as a gesture of appeasement towards China, a decision which was widely criticised in Japan given the extremely sympathetic attitude of Taiwan in response to the tragedy.

This year, likely helped along by the presence of an LDP government and China’s continuing provocations, Taiwan was allowed to present a wreath and announced together with the other participating countries – tacitly acknowledging its independence and infuriating China into the bargain.

China denounced the change, saying it was “firmly opposed” to “any violation of the principles of the joint declaration” and voicing its “intense dissatisfaction and protest” against the development, although it has not gone so far as to tie the two events together.

Online there has been almost universal condemnation (some are evidently happier with them staying away) of both nations, with efforts to politicise attendance at such an event being seen as in the worst possible taste.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the 11th also saw reports of Chinese patrol ships once again circling the disputed Senkaku islands.

It's quite interesting. My grandfather does not hold any grudges against Japan. He was in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation and considering how my grandmother's sisters 'disappeared' during the occupation (and forced to work as comfort women) would have been more than enough to really fuel old grudges against Japan.

But I remember one thing my grandparents said to me and it stuck.

"Some people may hold on to the past but you shouldn't. There has to be at least one party willing to mediate and hold on to the future so that future generations can be happy and learn from the past's gruesome mistakes."

I think that's the best I can translate from Cantonese.

Well the issue with Taiwan is, Taiwan used to be a city in China. China sees Taiwan as its territory, and not as an autonomous state. They're essentially a rebel holdout of the pre-communist old regime, and as long as they exist, they're a threat to mainland china. China does not want to acknowledge they're an independent state that is running separate from China. Likewise, Taiwan sees themselves as the true China. That attitude as faded as they accept they are now a little island nation.

It's just like how North Korea does not see South Korea as a legitimate country, and vice versa. But as a divided state. Has nothing to do with grudges. It's about territory and control.

It's actually simpler than that... neither side wants to admit defeat, and both sides want to see the two sides united (albeit on their own terms). As a result, the civil war is technically STILL ongoing.

Actually, Taiwan deserve to be there. And of course, CHina is going to cry about it because they think they control us.

Taiwan actually sent a lot of help to Japan during Fukishima and the earthquake. The consensus here in taiwan is that we are proud and happy to send help and happy to help Japan, who helped us a lot as well too.

China and Korea will always be Korea and China: they are stuck in their racist prejiducal ways and still raging about things that happened in the past. The two will never change and until that happens, there will alwayss be issues between Japan, Korea and China.

Now all these are not disgraceful like forcing a Taiwanese to become Chinese because those are not crap holes like China is, but I think people can get the gist.

Just because they might have the same bloodline, or live close to each other, people live under different governments and obey different laws and have different culture and have different set of morals etc etc.

Sure Taiwanese is Chinese by blood but their country is Taiwan.

If you think people should act and identify themselves due to their "Bloodline", then you are a racist.

Humans should identify themselves in their own individual believes and morals, that's what makes people unique, not their race.

Nobody holds a grudge towards Germany because they have a different government AND the new government apologized for the wrong doings of its predecessor in the war.
In the other hand, Japanese government (the same one that started the war) never apologized and even refused in several accounts to compensate the families of the victims. Sigh, Nanking Massacre.

In May 1994, Justice Minister Shigeto Nagano called the Nanjing Massacre a "fabrication".
On June 19, 2007, a group of around 100 Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers again denounced the Nanjing Massacre as a fabrication, arguing that there was no evidence to prove the allegations of mass killings by Japanese soldiers. They accused Beijing of using the alleged incident as a "political advertisement".
On February 20, 2012, Takashi Kawamura, mayor of Nagoya, told a visiting delegation from Nanjing that the massacre "probably never happened". Two days later he defended his remarks, saying, "Even since I was a national Diet representative, I have said [repeatedly] there was no [Nanjing] massacre that resulted in murders of several hundred thousands of people."
On February 24, 2012, Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara said that he also believes that the Nanjing massacre never happened. He reportedly claims it would have been impossible to kill so many people in such a short period of time.

De facto occupation began with Japan-Korea Treaty of Amity in 1876, when Japanese troops no longer have to follow Korean laws while in Korea, even before Korea became a formal vassal state in 1905.

That was because PHL is a long time trading partner of Japan and are actually in good terms before, and after the war. Davao is where the Japanese usually (and still) hang out.

The Japanese empire also seriously considered intervening when PH was still a Spanish territory.

The Japanese were kind to Filipinos in comparison, even in wartime. Of course, they had to do what had to be done to those that opposed them. After the war, they decided to resume business, and still does to this day.

I've put it in the past where the situation now and then were greatly different.
