The recent revelations that Kyoto Animation’s latest magnum opus is to be a gorgeously animated tale of lithe young men in swimming trunks have proven controversial amongst their fans, many of whom are now revolting in more ways than one – although fujoshi everywhere are doubtless ecstatic.

The trailer:

Traditional fans seem to regard anything other than a stream of familiar ‘blobs as a major betrayal:

“This is totally aimed at womed – poor moetards!”

“Creepy CM!”

“Sexy stuff.”

“Please don’t become some creepy rotten homo anime studio!”

“As opposed to churning out creepy moe anime? They are creepy enough as it is. Apart from Nichijou all their recent anime look identical.”

“They have forsaken the moetards!”

“No homo stuff please. At least put one girl in there!”

“They’re even shaving their armpits…”

“They sure do run like girls.”

“Those abs are overdone.”

“Tamako was pretty awful too, so now they’re aiming at women?”

“Tamako bombed so hard and was not well received by the moetard core, so now it looks like they are abandoning them completely with this. Honestly, switching from extremes of fringe moe anime to extremes of fringe BL anime seems to be just repeating the same mistake.”

“Seeing that K-ON! was actually popular with JKs as well as otaku seems to have precipitated a change in direction, starting with Tamako and now this.”

“This is probably part of some scheme to get at all the taxes the Tokyo government is wasting on its Olympic bid.”

“I am ashamed to say I actually thought this looked pretty good.”

“Tamako flopped so they want to try hitting the fujoshi demographic with this, seems reasonable.”

“It really reeks of KyoAni’s usual extreme quality.”

“Munto is awaiting its successor.”

“As Munto proved, KyoAni has no aptitude for original projects. Most anime studios are the same – just look at Gonzo.”

“With hits like Tiger & Bunny, Kuroko, Tenipuri, Utapuri and so on, it is not hard to see why KyoAni wants a slice of the rotten pie. Even DEEN managed to get Hetalia selling well despite it being total trash anime.”

“There seems to be a lot of anticipation overseas as well – something like this seems to be in demand.”

“Finally some nipples from KyoAni…”

“For once, here’s hoping they cover these ones with beams of light!”

Lol. This one is probably too lacking in the female character department (if only they'd at least put ONE cute girl in there...) for me to watch it, but I don't hold it against KyoAni for making an anime aimed at the female demographic for once. I can totally understand why they would try it, and there are enough other shows for us guys anyway. Good for the girls I guess. ; )

Somebody please make a S2 of Ouran Highschool Host Club though. I may be a guy, and mostly watching Seinen and Shounen, but Ouran was so damn funny I enjoyed it even though it's Shoujo and Reverse-Harem. Only one of it's kind that I liked though.

At last, a sane example of a moe fan. You're a beacon of light for all otaku. Let's hope the majority of them can learn to be human like you...

Im not gonna lie, I'd watch it.

Loyalty to a studio can change if it starts producing stuff that the fans don't like/won't accept. Fans aren't stupid, nor are they blind.

Fujioshi aren't that different from people who enjoy hentai. They both want graphical fanservice so can we just respect each others choice in whatever the shit they want to see?
I mean I could talk about how extremely bigotical of Japan it is for wanting another female in there, not wanting "gays" as well as the abs being overdone

    But you know,
    acknowledging and respect.
    Shouldnt be that hard.

Eh, I don't like BL stuff because I don't like gays. I guess once this sells like crap they'll go back to normal. Everyone knows women don't have money. Thank you income disparity.

I'm not saying I dislike actual gays, I just dislike things like that. It's like saying I don't like mecha, but those guys spend a lot of money on things, so we'll never get rid of it.

There's nothing to indicate here that this show would be BL or yaoi.

I guess they've figured out the amount of fujoshi are increasing so they're trying to market out to that segment. Now they'll have moetards and fujoshis under their spell >.>

Can I also add for those who whine about the abs being overdone, people could say exactly the same fucking thing about girls boobs being way overdone and sexualized in general animes?

You do know that K-On! is horrendously popular with girls as well, right? Heck, it's so family friendly, it's airing on the Disney Channel.

Just because a show is "moe" (obviously the wrong definition is used here) doesn't mean that it's filthy, exploitative or cheap. Nor does it mean that girls can't like it as well.

    Comment by Anonymous

That's what makes it all the more creepy and unlikable for a lot of people, though... the fact that something that would otherwise not be even considered to be sexual, has actually been used as fap material and idol worship before the "innocent" even laid their eyes on it. I for one will always see it with this stigma that when they designed Mio's smile, it was meant to get otaku off....

I'm a woman and I fucking love K-On! (I claim that mai waifu is Mugi-chan) and other assortment of moe, female-only characters anime, in fact wasn't the movie popular even with the non-anime crowd?

So far the only complaints I've heard from were either people who love to hate popular stuff, people who hate moe-blobs and people who hate anime in general, but nobody so far who hated K-On was mainly female.

Uhm, KyoAni's shows have been hits with female otaku as well as male, and like them or hate them they all have SOME substance besides "girls you can wank to". It doesn't at all compare to the utter shallowness that is the girls wanting them to turn a 30 second commercial into a series for absolutely no reason other than that it has scantily clad guys in it.

    Comment by Anonymous

There's the character interactions, the expressiveness of the animation, the fact that the water was PROPERLY ANIMATED, and the fact that it's a new direction for Kyo-Ani. All of these reasons are more than enough to warrant this anime.
