Chinese Yokosuka Infiltrator “Wanted To Join US Army”

george_washington-at-yokosuka.jpg

A Chinese man arrested deep inside one of America’s major naval bases in Japan claims he infiltrated the base as he “didn’t want to go back to China” and that he “wants to join the US army.”

The 24-year-old Chinese man snuck into at the United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka naval base in Japan’s Kanagawa prefecture one morning, which he had entered undetected.

US military police discovered the man at one of the base’s harbour facilities, 1.5km away from the main gate (the base itself abuts directly onto downtown Yokosuka), and promptly detained him for trespass.

He was handed over to Japanese police for prosecution (or as seems more likely, discrete repatriation to China), and claims he just wanted to enlist to escape China:

“I came to Japan 10 days ago on a ship. I didn’t want to return to China, so I wanted to join the US army.”

According to police he spoke only Chinese and some halting English, and his identity was beyond doubt as he carried a Chinese passport.

yokosuka-jcg-security.jpg

The incident is particularly humiliating for the authorities as only 3 days before they held a major joint exercise aimed at preventing Islamist terrorists using a small boat to launch an attack on the nuclear carriers regularly anchoured at the base.

Both the pathetic security in force at a major US military installation and whether the man had any other reason for infiltrating the base have been widely commented on – although it seems brazen conduct for a spy, few seem inclined to believe that he could have entertained any serious hope of joining the US military by sneaking onto their base.

Clearly, this is a conspiracy by the US military. Faced with budget cuts, the military purposely LET this guy sneak in, so they have an excuse to ask for more funding.

Its actually not that big of a deal, most US military bases are open to civilian traffic. Unless the base is on lock down its security isn't really aimed at preventing a lone person from sneaking in. The vast majority of base security is centered around protecting the areas off limits to civilians.

Especially true considering it was in a peaceful area. If it were in a conflict zone, he'd be detained or shot while trying to hop the gate.

As someone who grew up on Military bases around the World, I can honestly say that the security is very lax. Hell, 29 Palms CA just lets people on if they have an ID of some sort.

Considering Japan is one of the most sedated areas (when it comes to crime) it wouldn't surprise me if they had a tour bus running in and out.

True they would be more so concerned with someone sneaking in with a weapons and explosives or a boat bringing in a large bomb.
The facilities themselves are probably mostly open to the public except for key areas.

You probably could get away with a lot more nosing around in the JSDF facilities which are probably even more open to the public then a US base and are not used to dealing with terrorists.

How would they know you're not? They don't even search your car trunks when you drive in, just check ID. At least it's that way in US mainland bases.

Yeah. I don't think Artefact or anyone commenting here by majority even knows how military bases work. At least, those that are efficient and well-organized.

In modern world, trying to defend and set up watch patrols for every inch of the perimeter of a military base is neither effective nor sufficient. Instead, REALLY important things are not kept at any specific location for an extended duration of time, nor are they put in such obvious places as underground bunkers as if putting up a huge neon sign that says: "Valuable military hardware and intelligence here - come get it if you can!".

Most of the bases are at the very least open to public during the day provided you have basic ID, and even then you are pretty much under same security provisions as you are in a museum. The REALLY important parts of the bases are not only hidden away, they are physically impossible for a lone wanderer or 'infiltrator' to sneak into. This ain't some kind of splinter cell bullshit. There aren't locks, number pads, laser sentries or other crap they think constitutes 'security'. True security lies in deception and misinformation, not physical hindrances.

Yeah, I remember walking all over the military base here as a kid. Even doing things like playing miniature golf in it also since they had a rec area and I had family members in service.

Hell, it even allowed for the neighboring schools to hold swimming classes in their pool since the towns where the size of 8,000-14,000 people with no pools at the schools or anything.

It's not armed guards in front of buildings while people with spotlights and sniper rifles man towers or whatever the hell people think they are..

I'm surprised they didn't ship him off to Gitmo.

They did ca5tch him 1.5Km from the main gate so is this really a security failure?
Sounds more like they actually did a good job this time around except for the handing him over to Japanese authorities who will most likely just ship him back to China.

If the guy is actually genuine, even if his dodgy English and attempt to trespass means he has no chance of actually getting enlisted, for PR purposes, the US army could consider giving him some sort of PR role (without any actual access to army secrets whatever, even as an army clown would do) just to embarrass the People's Republic of China while making the US look good out.

    No, that's my point.

Rather than just leave it as something embarrassing for the US Army, they have the opportunity to turn the tables and make the PRC look even worse, turning an unideal situation into a PR coup.

The poor sod could still think he's been enlisted or granted a Green Card when he's nothing but a convenient clown. The Army is free to ship him off to Gitmo afterwards.

If he wanted amnesty/asylum, he should have gone to the US Embassy or sought advice from a couple servicemen. But since he screwed up and got caught by Japanese, instead he'll be on a 1-way trip to a Chinese 'reconditioning camp'. Sucks to be him.

US Embassy don't take asylum for "economic migrant" which is what he is. Even with political asylum, the bar for proof is high, especially for Chinese. Immigration system is the one place where racial discrimination is alive and well. The only people that actually get accepted easily are Cubans.

His stupid mistake is trying to join US military. Normally, he'd be let out immediately once in China, free to try again. Now, he's gonna rot in prison.
