Where's Miku?
She's not an anime girl.
Nor is she completely flat.
She did make a cameo in Zetsubou-sensei, and possibly other anime.
Though, I think a bigger concern is the fact that Miku actually isn't THAT flat (given, her appearance varies with the artist, but some official pieces of art seem to depict her with a B-cup).
It slightly saddens me that Merry Nightmare wasn't on this list...she was adorbs.
yeah, she was pretty much the first thing I was trying to find on this list, and was so disappointed when I didn't see her. T_T
I don't know what it is about Merry... I'm not into flat chests OR short hair, and yet I manage to find her quite the looker despite combining both (I could probably count on one hand the number of characters with similar features whom I'd want to tap). Also noteworthy in that I'm probably willing to consider her my favorite of her respective series, despite said series having its fair amount of the busty and/or longhair types.
It's a combination of, well, her personality, looks and design that made Merry appealing. She's already quite a looker, without taking into account of her skimpy clothing. I mean seriously, someone of her height being that slender with such well-shaped waist and thighs, not to mention the pretty face?
Then we add the part about her confidence without seeming too cocky or gung-ho, and her vulnerabilities without making her needy. She's the strong, stubborn archetype without turning into a tsundere, and at the same time, vulnerable, easily flustered type without turning into an annoying five year old. That balance of confidence-vulnerability made her a very strong character.
ah... when it comes to sexualizing fictional characters, I find it to be 80% looks, 20% personality (maybe even less). They don't actually exist, and while it's one thing to enjoy a character's personality and/or role in the story, it's another to actually look at them as a member of the opposite sex (or same sex if that's your thing). In that regard, I say there's absolutely no consequence in being shallow (in fact, their external appearance may have been designed for the sole purpose of being gawked at, and we mustn't forget they can be made to engage in any person's wildest fantasies through the magic of doujinshi). That's my take on it, anyway (but I hope I don't come off as insulting to the concept of waifus or anything).
What you said about Merry makes sense, though. She's flat, but with that tall and trim body, she definitely ain't gonna be mistaken for a child. And she does manage to act tough without being an outright tsundere, which I do like (I have some exceptions, but I'm not overly big on tsundere... I may've said 20% personality, but that 20% still accounts for something).
