I've never watched Yuru Yuri and I recognize that name, she's a supporting character, sister of one of the main characters I believe.
I guess you guys didn't get Anon 08:14's joke...Akarin is always being made fun of IN THE SHOW for being all transparent and unnoticable despite being the main character (yes, she IS the main character, that's not debatable, as it's official). Anon was adhering to that. Hence why everyone upvoted him. I can't believe you guys missed that, you need to have your joke detectors fixed. :-/

I do agree, these characters don't really fit my ideal of a heroine...

Then again, by what I just said does not fit with the Japanese ideal of a woman.
I haven't seen all the animes on the list, but I know Chitanda (Hyouka) isn't really a heroine, more of the driving plot device.
more like chitanda was the evil antagonist, dragging innocent people into her games of fancy and fits of endless curiosity.
Just call it 'female protagonist' and go from there.
Words can have more than one meaning. According to dictionary.com, the word heroine can mean, among other things "the principal female character in a story, play, film, etc.".

I guess my tastes are completely out of tune with Japan's... I only have 3 or so 2012 anime ladies that I like, such as Fujiko Mine and Rias from Highschool Dxd. None of my ladies are even in this list XD
Hands-down, Chitanda is the TRUE heroine for all time. She's going to save her town, Japan, and world with her farming skillz. If you lot had watch the last ep, you would have known.
