Japanese Wikipedia = “AV, AKB48 & SAO”

Wikipedia’s otapedic tendencies have again been attracting attention, this time with a national comparison of the most viewed Wikipedia pages revealing the most viewed page on the Japanese edition in 2012 was a list of porn stars, followed by AKB48 and a long list of anime, as compared to the English version’s fascination with Facebook and the Chinese edition’s love of Japanese porn.

The 10 most viewed articles on ja.wikipedia.org for 2012:

1. List of AV actresses 18,569,543

2. AKB48 7,133,542

3. Momoiro Clover Z 5,979,052

4. ONE PIECE 5,211,171

This is of course not the first time Wikipedia’s pronounced national drift has been remarked upon.

China’s shares Japan’s love of porn (and indeed most of her porn stars) and is impressively subversive, although just what is behind their fascination with favicons is not clear:

3. Wiki 3,340,748

9. Tiananmen Square protests 2,145,147

10. Running Man (Korean show) 2,123,488

By way of comparison, the same ranking for en.wikipedia.org, bearing a depressing resemblance to the sort of thing to grace the top page of Yahoo!:

1. Facebook 32,647,942

2. Wiki 29,613,759

3. Deaths in 2012 25,418,587
