It seems you've completely missed the point of Fate/Zero.
In the prologue, it said that anyone harboring false illusions about their "magical heroes" as nothing more than tools is setting up for death and defeat.
The despair that the characters are shown serve to show the harshness of reality and failed dreams, something Urobuchi is competent at writing, in Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica, and to a lesser extent Psycho Pass.

Anyways, definitely the surprise of the season for me. Was not expecting something like this considering the PV's and everything before it aired.
