Ishihara: “Japanese Is The Only Non-White Modern Nation”

Tokyo’s 80-year-old former mayor Shintaro Ishihara has yet again courted controversy by remarking that “the Japanese are the only coloured race to make a modern nation” – by extension implying that China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the rest are all pre-modern primitives.
Ishihara made the remarks in a recent spot of street oratory in support of his candidacy with Hashimoto’s Japan Restoration Party, into which he has insinuated himself after abandoning his post as mayor of Tokyo and “Sunrise Party”:
In modern times the only coloured race [“race of colour”] to make a modern nation are the Japanese.
This is all thanks to the wisdom and effort of the Japanese.
Our grandparents and great-grandparents started the Meiji Restoration, and made Japan into a modern nation.
The refusal to acknowledge Korea and China as modern nations (Taiwan and Singapore probably having escaped his addled mind or having been attributed to their colonial development at the hands of the superior Japanese and British) and his obvious satisfaction with the superiority of the Japanese have been taken as rather unsubtle slights directed at the noisome primitives populating the rest of Asia.
Ishihara is of course no stranger to race-baiting, during his long tenure as mayor of Tokyo having directed racially framed criticism towards Chinese and Koreans, whites, homosexuals, young people, otaku, and even the people of Tokyo who for some reason kept electing him.
Even some of the noisy net-rightists to whom he is a cherished fuhrer are having difficulty with such statements:

Taiwan and South Korea are well behind in per capita GDP, Hong Kong is a good chunk back (and shouldn't be conflated with the PRC (commonly known as China) anyway), and Singapore is a little ahead. Therefore everything you said in your third sentence is wrong, with the thing closest to being right being "Singapore...would look at Japan as down-right poor.", which is also wrong, as Singapore is only 7.4% ahead of Japan in per capita GDP.

By the way, Singapore's distribution of wealth (Gini coefficient) is considerably worse than Japan's, so if you're "average" you're likely to be paid more in Japan. Never mind that the goods and services in Japan are sure to be on balance better than what's available in Singapore (laws aside), at least in Tokyo, the most populous city in the world, and the city with the largest economy in the world of all cities. Face it, Singapore has no serious ability to "look at Japan as down-right poor", unless you think Japan should look at Hong Kong (and the U.S. should look at the U.K.) as "destitute", and Taiwan and South Korea as "impoverished". And of course by these standards China may as well be considered to have a negative per capita GDP, considering that Taiwan and South Korea leave it in the dust.

My post and its parent didn't mention PPP GDP, which is not the default when one mentions GDP. So you're just starting a new discussion there (which needs to consider another layer, the modification of nominal GDP to PPP GDP), not replying to anything I said.
I'll just say that PPP isn't better for everything, as the world actually cares directly about currency exchange rates, too. It's true that if you have a bunch of money you can move to Squalorland and have it last longer, but that won't help you when you want first world goods and services (healthcare, electronics, less corrupt police, etc.).
So it really depends on how focused you are on basic needs vs. high quality goods and services that require importation or living in a good place. First worlders are the ones buying the latter more than anyone else.
As for Singapore specifically, its strict laws may be enough to make it "lose" to Japan overall, given their first world status otherwise. Hong Kong is under Chinese rule now so it's a bad long term bet if you like freedom.
