I remember the last chinese girl cosplayed as athena from saint saiya, she had both fan photo and profile photo up here in sancom, and actually looked really pretty in person without shoop.
Regardless of what you think of it. Photoshop takes some real skills to use correctly. It's an art all to itself.

There are plenty of pretty girls in china, haven't you seen the 2008 olympics? it's just most of them don't have to resort to popularity via cosplay. plenty of them actually hold good education and income. photoshopped profile pics are norm in china. personally i think it is really vain, but whatever floats their boat i guess. what i don't understand is why you would say chinese have rubbish lifestyle. have you been to beijing? i can afford the same lifestyle there as i do in us for 10,000 rmb/mo, which is about little more than twice of some guy working in mc donalds. I seriously doubt you can live comfortably in DC for $16~18us/hr income.

Actually, it's the former.
Human eyeball and iris are around the same size. You can distinguish actual exposed natural eye size from heavy makeup by how much sclera (white part of eye) is showing. She has a lot of sclera showing.
The same can be done with facial outline. Focus on the outline, not frontal surface of the powdered face. No amount of cake-on makeup can alter facial outline. Her facial outline is a standard oval egg, without imperfections present on most people.
though with photoshop those methods go out the window, and these feel shopped...

Nah, I've met a few girls with eyes that large (in real life, shock!). Mind you, they usually have larger than average eyes which are then made to look even larger with makeup. Whether this girl's eyes are shopped or not are a whole other story.
