No, it's not cameras or being photographed on its own, it's image being stretched horizontally in older TV formats which as a side effect makes everyone literally wider. It's blatantly obvious when they re-use footage from some 70s on modern HDTV. Virtually anyone that even looks at the image would notice that it's distorted horizontally since studios often/usually do not bother to fix it even though they must be aware of this and could fix or at least make it less annoying it if they wanted.
Dude. You should really fix your TV. It's not the studios' fault if you can't configure it. "Letterbox" is probably the setting you want.
