That part would have been cool, but it's not that important other than explaining that there's a really powerful sword called Excaliber there. When it appears later on they can just drop a sentence "It's the most powerful sword!" and be done with it.
Sadly they only have a few episodes in which they have to finish this arc. At this point, skipped scenes is inevitable.

Sword Art Online is a very awful,plot holes around every corner, and it is just badly adapted. It had potential and it was wasted...
this anime is so overrated, incredibly overrated, just a few 3 minute fight episodes, tell them that the story is being done on a game and millions still believe that this is awesome, leafa is going nowhere, asuna is the same crappy fairy tale princes trapped on a tower, kirito is a womanizer and the SAO arc ending was terrible.
Overrated, maybe.
But it's still more entertaining then at least half the other random animated dribble that I'm finding.
