In a weird way you have to admire that the Chinese government honored the idea of private property. Here in the U.S. they'd just eminent domain that shit and you'll be happy to have gotten anything in return.
Eminent domain has been NUMEROUS times challenged and overturned due to the government not wanting to pay the 'current market value' of the home in the U.S.
um... you do know the government can pay the current market value in a 30 year installment that will totally screw the owners right? the law never stated it has to be a one time payment.
only if you get enough people to make this into a constitutional amendment, which is close to never.
It shouldn't have to be an amendment, it's already in there. Whats happened is a couple life term judge have decided to legislate from the bench through the commerce clause stating that the constitution doesn't tightly define the meaning of a "fair market value"
Which is why people are fighting to get it rescinded.

In America it's called Eminent Domain. They'd simply lose their house if they didn't accept the offer/make a court case in time.
To an extent, but ever since 1975 or so, every run-down inner-city ghetto neighborhood is a "historical district," every puddle is a "wetland," and you can't walk anywhere without tripping over 5 new endangered species. (They even re-routed a road in Texas because of a spider habitat, and that's not exactly a liberal eco-lover's paradise state.)
China's ability to get roads built and expanded has, this case notwithstanding, outstripped the U.S. Let's just hope the people in that house keep a close eye on their young children , or we're going to hear about more double-tap incidents.
The US is capable of being just as bad. All they have to do is accuse the homeowners of certain crimes, mostly having to do with drugs. The house can then be seized, and the owners will not get it back regardless of the outcome of the trial. Never specifically heard of this happening but it would be 100% legal if it did.

Though lately with the housing and foreclosure rates being what they are, people have been evicted by the police unlawfully, even by banks who didn't own the rights to the house. I have seen this in the news before and it does happen.

umm... most countries would simply demolish the house without offering compensation.
It's somewhat ironic that this is due to a recent law change in China that gave citizens more rights - used to be that the overall government would just sieze the land, but they introduced a law that said you had to get the landholders okay and this is the result the local government took.
From my (admittedly shaky) understanding is that all land in China is the property of the Communist Party and you are granted the privilege of having a building (which you do own) on top of it until the party decides it wants to use the land for something else.
It used to be that the gov't could just demolish whatever they wanted without compensating the owner but the change in the law requires them to offer the owner market value based on square footage of floor space. This is why farmers were suddenly renovating their several hundred year old houses to add more rooms and even second levels so they would receive more money when they were bought out.
What ended up happening, is the officials doing the measuring would under report floor space or insist that any renovations done after some arbitrary date in the 1950's didn't count. Most people are offered a city apartment (The kind you see fallen over or with huge structural crack in the walls on this site) in lieu of cash.

My UK friend has said, that's actually quite commendable for the Chinese government to still negotiate with the resident. In UK, if it's a government project, the residents would be forcefully removed from their house by police through eviction 'law', and while they get compesation, there is no legal safe guards for the amount.
