It would appear the only thing capable of knocking Taiga and Ryuji off the top of an anime couple ranking is cunningly restricting it to husband and wife couples only – although Kirito and Asuna’s booming popularity might yet give them a fighting chance even without this distinction.

Pretty sure they did, since they had a kid and all. But I don't think they should be on the list anyway.
[SPOILERS] I mean, Kenshin starts a family, has a kid, then runs off all the time to save the world while neglecting his family. His son actually specifically hates him for some time for abandoning his mother to raise him alone. Then when he finally settles down, it's because his body's injuries can take no more, and he dies shortly after. Even if Kaoru is understanding and Kenshin was driven by altruism, that's not a happy married relationship. [/SPOILERS]
Nice spoilers bro. Technically speaking, those are just the OVA's, the manga ends differently, but whatever.
Personally I didn't like either the OVA or the manga's ending. Neither of them seemed to make Kenshin come to terms with either his past guilt or mortality, which I think was one of the most important themes in the story. But anyway I'm getting way off topic.
I kind of wish Guts and Casca were on this list. Technically they're not married, but they've got that romance going on for a short while which made them look like the perfect couple for each other.
Besides it's EXTREMELY rare for anime to show couples in a healthy relationship.

Godai & Kyoko [Maison Ikkoku] were probably the best example of that rare "happy end" couple. Mainly thanks to Kyoko's late husband having a kind & supportive father.
Kaoru & Aoi [Ai Yori Aoshi] was another example, but the ending brought them from courting lovers to two people stuck in a tiny apartment, struggling to make it on their own. The author really robbed those two of their happiness, when he took away their inherited wealth.
Actually Maison Ikkoku was not part of OVA.
[Spoilers] Godai and Kyoko get married at the tail end of Maison Ikkoku and have a daughter called Haruka.[/End Spoiler]

Actually although they are living in a small apartment, the small gold badge that is shown on Kaoru's suit means that Kaoru actually became an attorney or something (so he had a good career path). And imo they both looked quite happy to themselves as they didn't care about the materialistic things they have as long as they had each other. But hey, the definition of "happiness" depends on the individual so if you think wealth = happiness then that's fine as well.

But they are not as popular as most of the characters on this list.

Huh. Good point. Though I think it may be because they never really...*felt* married. All of these couples have either been married for some time, or married after their relationship has developed to that point.
As opposed to Mizuho and Kei, who are shoehorned into marriage randomly as the story's starting premise and then get used to each other. Their relationship is definitely sweet, but it feels more like a high school dating couple than a married relationship.
Moroboshi Ataru and Lum are also missing. Like I said, this list isn't even trying to look legit.
They weren't really married. They didn't exactly consummate their union.
Technically they married in Ep01.
First couple I thought of when I saw this list. Also left out were Kare Kano's Yukino & Soichiro and Futari Ecchi's Yura & Makoto.
