My impression always was that it would be something in between Chuu2's portrayal (children living with grandparents) and the typical western scenario (mother fully taking care of children herself). Like, letting them live with their grandparents while working in the city to provide some financial support, with frequent visits by both children and mother. As opposed to disappearing and completely ignoring the children's existence as in the case of Chuu2.
By all means, correct me if I'm wrong, but provide some credibility.
She was dealing with the emotional stress of a dying spouse, hoping every single day for some miracle to erase the nightmare of her every waking hour. Add the shock of mortality to that and maybe she flipped out. That kinda stuff is hard.

I don't think the latter is more common in Japan with any significance. What kind of experience are you speaking from? Have you worked in Japan? Did you get insight into family affairs of female Japanese coworkers or female Japanese singles with children?
It also seems fishy that their entire maternal family appears to willfully disacknowledge their existence for no apparent reason. Why were their paternal grandparents the only ones to volunteer caring for them?
