Wii U Power Brick “Xbox Huge”

The first formal unboxing of the Wii U has seen immediate complaints about the “Xbox huge” size of the two power adapters the console comes with, although its defenders were soon channelling the spirit of Steve Jobs with the defence that “the brick is not too large, your home is too small!”

The ceremonial unboxing was performed by no less than Nintendo honcho Satoru Iwata:

The sight of the unit unboxed immediately prompted derisive criticism from Japanese gamers sensitive about their tiny homes, with such complaints as “the AC adapter is the main unit,” “they probably dumped it into that brick to make the console look smaller,” and “even the damn controller has a brick!?”

Nintendo fans however were quick to retort with “what kind of rabbit hutch do you live in if that is too big for you?” and “at least the main unit isn’t gigantic!”

Oh wow, should have just built it into the console. The cable used to charge the WiiU Controller is not nice looking either.

I sure wish those wires and AC adapters that I'm going to plug in once and never see again as they're behind my TV setup were smaller.

Building the transformer into the power cable and not the console allows it to dissipate heat better, reducing the need for noisy fans.

But doesnt 360s have external,(and about the size of a small house) PSUs? thery noise because of all the extra "ventilation" they keep adding to avoid meltdowns an RRODs

The adapter reminds me of the a/c adapter that came with my first laptop. It weighed 3 pounds by itself.

I don't care how big it is as long as the plug itself is normal. I hate it when I have a device that has a huge plug, and takes up two outlets.

i think there is a market for short 5 inch extention cords, just enough to keep those bricks off the fucking walls.

old devices you still use (old consoles specificly) chargers and so forth

if you could get a 5 pack of these for 10$ or less, i think it would be a major seller

19:12 they already make them, I used them from time to time for powering modems & routers at client locations.

ebay keywords "Power Extension Strip Cord pigtails".

Short 3 prong extensions solve that problem. I use them from time to time, for entry level rack mount servers, to get around devices using external power supplies.

Is that huge gamepad defeat the purpose of WII? You going to go around swinging that thing around to play golf or bat? I don't think so.

What a waste they needed to get with todays graphics keeping the controller simple like they had for it to be the next gen WII.

This is the Wii U, the successor to Wii.

It's a brand new console, with enhanced graphical capabilities and with a new approach to gaming with its controller, the Wii U GamePad.

Maybe you haven't seen much yet, so here's a look at the games that'll be coming to the system - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPjhY0cFOKw

Are you a Nintendo employee? How many of you are on this site trying to say using outdated low cost Xbox power bricks is fine? It's the 8th generation of consoles, and it's using 6th gen stuff.

Nintendo's philosophy is to use outdated technology. It worked for some 30 years, why should they stop?

Feels like they're not doing their best, imo. MS and Sony bleed money just to show their consoles are different. And yes, their games are good, even if the hardware is not that modern. Please don't bring PC into this.

Do you have any idea of Engineering?
What they do with the Powerbricks is called modularization. It makes exchanging parts in case of failure a lot less of a pain.
In case of a surge the power adapter dying isn't that uncommon. It protects the digital logic components behind it, but has to be exchanged. Modularizing the power brick eliminates the need to open the console which are made a pain to open to discourage modding (among other things like design aspects). Less time spent on the repair -> less money wasted.

Sony doesn't do it and that's why they do everything they can to not exchange anything. Damn I've had a really hard time contacting PS3 support, on their site they just refer you to community support, those bastards.

Yes, let's spend another $ 50 on a power brick that doesn't do anything for the system other than cost more when it decided to die on you. Because the ps3 and xbox 360 failed quite a lot more than the wii did.

Modularization my ass. That's just Nintendrone double standards in the most disgusting form.

Console revisions should count as modularization. They've become more efficient.

    PS3 - PS3 Slim
    360 - 360 Slim
3DS - 3DS XL (wtf is modularization here)

Do people expect it to be run on magic? Its the same size as the 360 and PS3 power supplies. Theres no getting around it unless you resurrect Tesla and have him invent a new way of creating power.

You're not meant to swing it around. :P It's meant to be used more like a standard controller, with the touch screen and motion controls used for things like inventory or a sniper scope, or for controlling things out of the view of other players. The Wii Remote Plus will continue to be used for party games that involve "swinging things around", only now there will be the option for one player to control a different aspect of the game via the new controller, in a sort of "asymmetric gaming" format.

    Like the size matters.
You're not supposed to carry it around in your backpack/purse, you're supposed to connect it to your TV, and leave it there 'till it's time to replace it with a new product.

The thing is Nintendo and Microsoft as well as their supporters shat on Sony for the first gen PS3 being so big and heavy and compared their consoles to it, but never mentioned that in that comparision they don't take in their PSU which was integrated in the PS3.

The PS3phat is actually LARGER that xbox1 and Japan shit all over xbox1, I don't recall any articles trashing PS3 because of it's size. But I sure do recall several trashing xbox for it.

If you think I'm trolling, I could take a picture of my PS3 60GB sitting on top of my xbox1. One of the first things I did when I got my PS3 was place it on top, just to see now much "smaller" it was, because no one was writing articles about it being "too big for Japanese rooms". And to my surprise, it takes up even more space.

    Come at me bro.

The Wii U has a much more powerful CPU and GPU then the Wii it takes more power to run them.

The other option would have been to integrate everything into the console but then it would be larger and run hotter.

    Comment by Dark Mage
    08:23 08/11/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

I forgot the third option split the PSU between the brick and switching units inside the console as done in laptops but this is more expensive and if you ever used a high performance laptop also would produce more heat as well.

    09:41 08/11/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

    Or, take the Ps2 option.

Build a console with a fan that actually does something.

I don't know who's idea it was to make consoles all "sleek" and shit but ever since the Ps2, all other consoles have had terrible fans.
