US Soldier Beats Schoolboy in Drunken Rampage

A US serviceman is in hospital after a drunken rampage in which he broke into a Okinawa apartment and beat up a schoolboy, broke their TV and then fell out of their 3rd floor window, all in violation of a rape-induced curfew.
A 24-year-old US soldier stationed at Okinawa’s Kadena Air Base reportedly entered a private residence in a local village without permission (the door was unlocked) at 1AM, and went on a rampage, punching a schoolboy in the face and breaking their TV.
The boy was lightly injured, and his younger brother who was also present escaped injury. Their mother was not present at the time, perhaps for the better considering the circumstances.
The incident started with a bar on the first floor of the same building calling police with a report of a drunken US serviceman running amok, after which he for some reason entered the apartment above.
His rampage ended with him falling out of the residence’s 3rd floor window to the street below, where authorities recovered him and took him to a base hospital for emergency treatment. He apparently suffered broken bones in the fall.
Police intend to arrest him for assault and trespass; as US soldiers are supposedly under curfew after 2 soldiers gang raped a local last month, his superiors are unlikely to be happy with him either.
Base critics wasted no time in condemning the curfew as “useless” and calling US soldiers “uncontrollable.”
Japan’s foreign minister has called the incident “outrageous” and demanded something actually be done to stop US forces committing such crimes. The cabinet secretary called the incident “exceedingly regrettable.”
Base officials issued an immediate apology the morning after the incident, also calling it “exceedingly regrettable,” as well as “inexcusable.”

A simple "We are sorry" is bullshit. The army should make an example of the soldier. Strip him of everything, give him a dishonorable discharge and have him tried criminally. That is the only way we can say to the world and other would-be criminals that America doesn't condone such things.
The writer of this article did a pretty good job making the American sound like a criminal. I'm not saying he is innocent, but I find it highly unlikely that he would barge into someones house for no reason and attack an individual. Sounds to me like, someone provoked him, lead him into his house, then pushed him from the window.

I disagree. When you go through bootcamp you're supposed to be taught discipline and self control. These armed forces members are not showing these traits, or upholding the beliefs they were sworn into service on. They disgrace their uniform and branch of the military, and have no right to masquerade around and bring bad press and ill will towards the armed forces. Strip them of their duties, rank, and everything they've gained from the military. A formal apology and PUBLIC dishonorable discharge should happen for these idiots.

In the case of Japan, it's because after WWII we forbade them from having a military due to the fervor of their troops and the losses it led to. Not being complete asswipes though, the US realized that without a military at all Japan would become quickly swallowed by either China or Russia, both of whom were incredibly upset with them, so it was decided that the US would act to defend Japan in the event of communist expansion in exchange for bases on Okinawa to act as an eastern foothold. Over the years the US has reduced the restrictions on the Japanese military and let them being to develop the JSDF, but it will never carry the weight of US military presence in terms of deterence.
tl;dr - Because the world is full of asshats and no one trusts anyone else (and they shouldn't!).
We really need to accept the fact that Japan has "grown up" after WWII and allow them to have their own military again and ultimately pull our troops out of there. It would be best for Japan and would probably be best for the USA as well; those bases there must be costing us billions. Plus China & N. Korea become Japan's problem, not ours.
