Disgaea D2 Trailer Unveiled

Disgaea D2 has received some of its first gameplay screens and a preview trailer – which, whilst likely to delight fans all the same, do cast some doubt on it “taking Disgaea to the next dimension.”
The video – presumably the graphics are intended to look 20 years old in celebration of their 20th anniversary:
By way of a labour-saving omake, until the 14th Nippon Ichi is offering a chance to submit suitably weird or inane candidate names for the random name generator.

So, Laharl got longer pants and Etna's shorts are so short that they might as well be some fancy bikini bottoms.

I really don't think that's gonna happen unless there's another punishment mini-game thing. Which was stupid enough. Still mad over them about Mugen Souls.

This is NISAmerica, that's not going to happen... they'll keep it just as it was in japan unlike NamdaiBanco.
NISAmerica is actually known for censoring some things in the game's they've localized.

The real concern is how they covered up Flonne's shoulders. Seriously, a female character in Disgaea without waki exposure? Gross. The generic mages have the excuse that they're wearing maid uniforms, but this is just unforgivable.
I don't see your reason for complaining, what with much more shota pandering around than loli pandering these days.
Hint: The fact that I've used 1 on top of more than usual exclamation marks means I wasn't being totally serious.
I don't really care about those costumes, it's just some fans tend to adore Laharl's badass shorts.
By the way, Laharl has even less clothes than Etna. All he has is shorts and a cape that hardly ever covers anything. Just saying.

I really don't consider myself a loli fan, but with these two, I feel oddly compelled to make an exception (Flonne moreso).
They are well over 1000 years old, so that can't really be considered an exception. :P

Now that's some hyperbole if I ever heard it. Keep in mind that 20 years ago, the most powerful consoles we had were probably the Sega-CD and Turbo Grafx-CD (Mega-CD and PC Engine CD-ROM^2 in Japan), and I couldn't see them pulling off 2D sprites of that caliber. Hell, even if they said 15 years, I don't see Princess Crown (the predecessor to Odin Sphere and other Vanilla Ware titles) even coming close to such quality.
I like how they couldn't possibly make Etna's skirt any shorter, so they gave her hotpants instead.
WTF? The sprites aren't even full resolution! Are they every going to spend a dime on this series to re-do the last-generation graphics?
I hope it will have Eng Sub / Jap Dub...

Really, I love Japan and their games with a deep passion. They really need to learn from the west, ONLY IN TECHNOLOGY. Japan needs to make amazing Japanese games. But adopt and learn from western engineers and programmers when it comes to technology!!
I love Disgaea. Hearing Laharl's laugh is like a flashback to my childhood of watching Power Rangers.

Female Laharl is hot. Assuming the title is also a hint that the story is taking place in 2 dimensions. There is also a male etna and busty flonne.

Are you kidding me?! Those sprites look great.
The sprites look pretty good, but they're quite blurry if you view the full resolution screenshots. It looks like they use SD-resolution sprites, then upscale them to the 720p that the rest of the game is rendered in. And then they don't even bother to anti-alias the edges for some reason, making the black borders look excessively choppy, especially with the aliasing getting upscaled from SD. The game world itself is 3D, but the geometry is quite blocky, and many of the textures are again blurry. It might not be bad if the entire game were rendered at a lower resolution, but putting blurry, low-res graphics alongside sharp high-res graphics just looks kind of sloppy.
Who says good graphics has to mean 3D polygon? You can have high resolution sprites that looks like they just came out of an anime.
Except they don't have high resolution sprites. They have low resolution sprites that are upscaled and blurry.
That's what makes this game even more charming.
