Disgaea D2 Announced for PS3: “Laharl & Etna Return!”

Nippon Ichi has announced the next major Disgaea title for the PS3, to be entitled Disgaea D2 (“Dimension 2” – although it is “Disgaea 5” rather than yet another spin-off) and to feature the return of Laharl and company in a fully fledged continuation of the events of the original.
The announcement comes by way of Dengeki’s annual show, and is short on details – it is however confirmed that it will be for the PS3, and be released March 20th, 2013:
The game is billed as the “most ominous simulation RPG in history,” and the producer explains why the game received its “D2” title rather than “Disgaea 5”:
“The Disgaea series has been going 10 years now, and we thought we would return to where it all started with Laharl as the protagonist, and continue his story.
The D signifies us wanting to take it to the next dimension, [and also incorporates the D of Disgaea, destiny, and even drama.]”
With Laharl and company still enjoying considerable popularity 10 years on, a blockbuster hit for Nippon Ichi does not seem unlikely, and fan prayers have most certainly been answered.

You kind of forget the original and Laharal's mommy issues after so many other games.
But great to see them expand on the original. Might also open up the doors to some more sequels, could always use more Zetta and Gig.

Well I guess at least nippon ichi keeps me satisfied as a fan of the games they make unlike many other companies lately.
The main characters of the other Disgaea games (I've only played 1-3) were never as good as the original Laharl, Etna, and Flonne

I love N1 games. I just wish they could streamline character progression to level 9999 somewhat. The characters moves and skills should constantly evolve/upgrade/multiply, so that, at some point, it doesn't feel like you're mainly grinding for levels instead of true progession.

Wow I -re-started playing Disgaea 2 since yesterday even through I bought it a while ago on psp and I'm completely into it. Can't wait for this one, Laharl and Etna are win!
So the second image shows the new, high res sprites? Why do the colors look worse (check the skin on laharl's chest)? Why do the shadows have less definition (his hair is just a flat plane)? Did they outsource this to some 15 year old deviant artist?

Wait, what about Flonne? After the events of Disgaea 4, what "status" will Flonne be in? Is this gonna be a prequel?
It is a sequel to Disgaea 1 so I don't think any of that matters if that's what you mean...
I mean, what time line is this "sequel" in? Etna, Laharl, and Flonne's actions in Disgaea 2-4 are canon, so does this take place Before 2? After 4? Or somewhere in-between?

I've been having Disgaea withdrawal lately, so this is just what I needed.
They shoudl release the first one on the Play station store.

Yay for more incessant grindfests.. yay..
You dont have to grind at all, you can play through all of the main campaigns in every single game without doing a single map more then once.
Of course that is very hard but thats the beauty of it, you decide the difficulty by grinding.
I for one try to beat it at the lowest possible level then go on to grind for hundreds of hours, and why i like that part I cannot begin to understand.

You are a true disgaea fan - probably apart of that special few of us that actually reaches max levels
Depending on how you play it, it may be truly impossible to beat some of the later stages. If you play optimally, the end boss will be easy even without any grinding.
Reaching lv9999 is easy in the last two games. It takes about 10 hours each.
Now, getting a maxed character is... well if you know, and if you don't... you are better off that way.

For the NA release for sure. I doubt that they'll do that with the JPN release
NIS games always allows you to choose the audio.
NIS games always allow you to decide your preferred audio, but of course, NA release only.
More games should allow you to choose the audio, or allow you to download it if it's too large to fit on the disc.
Disagaea is a game I prefer in English, though. I watched a ton of Power Rangers as a kid, and I love that Laharl has the same voice as Rita Repulsa.
