Military otaku not satisfied with Upotte!! have been graced with tank moe anime Girls Und Panzer – although despite its promising title (“panzer” rendered into Japanese happens to sound just like “pantzer”) viewers will just have to settle for polishing their barrels unaided.
The reaction has in any case not been too favourable, with complaints levelled at everything from its poor CG to its bizarre premise and annoying characters:

I actually really liked that first episode. For me, the more absurd the premise the more I like the show. I also love stories that don't take themselves too seriously. I liked Upotte, Strike Witches, and Sora no Woto so I am sure I will like this show as well. The whole idea of tank battles as an international sport sounds awesome to me anyways.
So, I saw: PzIV Ausf.D (w Kwk 7.5cv 37 L/24), StugIII, type89, M3Lee, 38(t). (BTW type89, M3Lee and 38(t) were kinda crappy tanks.)
Where are British and Soviet panzers and girls with pantsus? Anyway, I was expecting lot's of action and fanservice girls in pantzuers, and there were little.
I do not want yet another "cute girls cacking cute things with tea" or Sora no Woto.

It's the first episode, and most of the time was wasted on the indecisiveness of the protagonist... At least going by the manga there will be action in it soon...and I'm sure fanservice will follow. Although, I don't really remember there being that much fanservice in the manga...

I loved that too. Friggin hilarious. Too bad the anime suffered from severely low production values even for its time.

A short-barreled Panzer IV...not bad. Its current gun is good for wrecking light tanks and vehicles, but it doesn't stand up very well against heavier targets, especially at longer ranges. They'll need the longer and more powerful L/48 75mm cannon if someone rolls in with something just as heavy or heavier than their own.
The L/24 installed on the original PzkpfwIV was due to the fact that it was originally designated as an infantry support tank, whilst the PzkpfwIII with its 50mm was intended to deal with tanks. Of course this doctrinal distinction proved to be useless and the Pzkfw IV was updated with better armour and dedicated anti-tank weaponry, being the more adaptable model. Although the Yanks disastrously continued the doctrine with their insistence to equip Shermans with with similar low velocity cannons, leaving dedicated tank destroyers to deal with enemy armour.
Due to its low velocity the L/24 is just as useless at long ranges as short. It's intended to throw HE.
But all in all, it isn't the tank that matters, but the crew within. A Crack Tank crew can beat a modern Abrams in a Type 97 Chi-Ha.

Not sure if trolling or serious... if serious, you're delusional. Considering the armor on an Abrams is superior to a Tiger and a Sherman tank had extreme trouble against even a green crewed Tiger, and the Sherman was superior to the Chi-Ha... yeah... you're kind of full of it.

They could beat an Abrams if and only if they had a couple of RPG-29's strapped to the turret.
The M4A3E8 (and other 76mm gun armed Shermans) says hi, as do the M10 and M36 tank destroyers based off of the M4 Sherman. The Sherman was actually probably the best tank of the whole war, seeing as it was highly reliable and, had the war gone on longer, we could have continue to upgrade and upgun it (there were actually designs for a Sherman with the 90mm gun used on the Pershing, and a prototype was built), while the Panzer IV had hit the limits of its suspension by the end of the war.
Also, Patton was for upgunning the Sherman sooner. It was McNair who insisted on keeping the short-barreled 75mm gun and not using the longer-barreled 76mm gun M1.
Lol @Anon, sherman was the best? in term of mobility ist true. but armor, please.. you haven't see the documentary of ex-sherman crew that somehow survive the onslaught of tiger and panther in WWII, they are simply outmatch by German .
if Russian does not keep german busy, Allied will be crushed.
The best medium tank so far in WWII was actually T-34 series, or phanter.
And the most successful heavy tank was Tiger.

Only the frontal Armour of the Abrams is impenetrable by a 50mm. This of course does not include the scope and sighting mechanism, and other modern electronics.
And besides, killing a tank doesn't nessecitate penetrating the armour. The 50mm is perfectly capable of detracking the abrams, renders it useless and easily destroyable by infantry or artillery.
And the Chi-Ha was one of the best tanks in WW2 due to it's adaptability, which allowed it to be upgunned and armoured easily as the war progressed like the Panzer IV. The Sherman was utter rub and contributed to the poor performance of American forces along with Patton's idiotic notions of strategy.
m1a2 has a RHA equivalence of between 200mm to 1100mm, more if it has the SEP package. The average crew in a M1A2 can take out 42+1 Chi-ha tanks

does japan dislike the UK or something? in episode 1 they were fighting with Matilda tanks and in the anime "upotte' they said the L85A1 bullpup rifle sucks...
The L85A1 was rated for 103 rounds without a stoppage. It is (was?) legitimately garbage.
The UK was just the major nonGerman producer of tanks. Based on the first episode, the Mathildas seem pretty capable.

The prevalent pronounciation of "Panzer" would actually be "pantzer" (as long as you pronounce the "a" the British way and not the American way.
That said, if it's similar bullcrap as to what Upotte was... I won't ever bother watching it.
It's at least promising that it's girls AND tanks and not girls ARE tanks.

There are, they commented on it while the whole school got to watch the panzer trailer. One commented that men shouldn't ride panzers as it's very unmanly.
