Standard Japanese Otaku short memory. Tenchi was so long ago that they don't remember it happened, much less what was in it.
More like American weeaboos get caught up in like the same 3-4 shows from Cartoon Network that they'll never let go, insisting that their rose-colored vision from watching them in primary school makes them the truest lasting masterpieces.
(SPOILER ALERT: anime then was as good/bad as anime now)
watched tenchi recently, as in i have the blurays, besides line delivery, i still consider it one of the greats, if not greatest of the harem genre
outlaw star, another great anime, not better than bebop but still good
was trigun one... that is still great, but feels really rushed.
however anime now... apparently they style it all to sell as fap material. some of that does get a good story, and can be interesting, tell me, if cowboy bebop, trigun, tenchi, really, any pre moe boom anime got a style of today, do you think they would still have the same story if not based of preexisting material?

Right. Because that's the thing everyone remembers about Tenchi Muyo! and Ah! My Goddess. That it's got like fifty chicks and they all wanna bone the male lead. Totally defines the shows.
Especially Ah! My Goddess. Yeah. I totally remember the episode where the main character agonizes whether to sack the hot young PoA that fell in his lap five minutes ago or stay faithful to the woman he proposed to.
Obviously, the most REFINED and TRULY MEMORABLE shows qualify.
After all, Kamichu! s a deep, compassionate story wherein the male character draws the attention of only one lead female who pines for him in a manner that doesn't liken itself to pornography. Nary an inch of indecent flesh exposed.
Nope. Huh-uh. Nyet. Naw. Certainly not a (very well drawn) retelling of your standard "main male is a spineless slug, therefore everything that doesn't directly qualify as male is hopelessly attracted to him, and he's totally not going to choose the VERY FIRST GIRL THAT SHOWED UP FROM THE START no way no how but OH WOW SEXY SHENANIGANS" plot.
Class-act grade-A genre-defining storytelling right there, but I can't help but feel like... like the plot's borrowing something. From somewhere. Not sure what.

I... don't remember Clannad including things like Gods in it.. unless you count the miracle of Nagisa surviving once Tomoya got all the light orbs ...
It had countless similarities to Shinto mythology, even though this was never referenced to directly. Such as the other world and the connection between the town and Nagisa. I even speculated that Ushio was actually the reincarnation of the town's deity that its inhabitants had forgotten.
good. at least someone looks 'into' an anime rather than simply absorbing what is been told or just admiring the blobs....
